Vulcan Gas Convection Oven Error Code E6: Shorted Control Output

E6 on a Vulcan-Hart gas convection oven with the VC5 control means the output of the temperature control board is shorted. The only cause listed is the temperature control board, and the manual says to call your service representative.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the control output is shorted, so the oven cannot heat normally until it is repaired.

What does Vulcan error code E6 mean?

E6 is the opposite of E5. The temperature control board sends an output to start the heating sequence, and the VC5 control checks that output. If it finds that the output is shorted, it shows E6 on the temperature display. The manual lists the temperature control board failure as the single cause and says to contact a service representative. A shorted output can mean the board's driver has failed in a stuck-on state, or that something in the wiring has shorted the output line. Because that output is part of the heating sequence, a shorted state is not something to test by running the oven. The control may refuse to heat to protect itself. A technician disconnects the output, checks the board and the wiring, and replaces the board if the short is inside it. This repair is on live control wiring and is not an operator job.

Affected models and control systems

Vulcan-Hart gas convection ovens with the VC5 control, which shows E and a number on the temperature display. The cover lists VC4GD, VC4GC, VC6GD, VC6GC, HGC5/HGC5D(X) and WKGD, so confirm the control label says VC5.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E6 on the temperature display
  • Oven not heating or heating unpredictably
  • Display on but no normal sequence
  • Code returning after a restart

Possible causes

Listed in Vulcan's documentation

  • Temperature control board failure

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E6 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A wire in the output line that is pinched and shorted to the frame
  • A board output driver that has failed shorted
  • Moisture or grease on the board connector

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the oven off and let it cool.
  2. Turn it on once to see whether E6 returns.
  3. Do not open the control cover or handle wires.
  4. Give the model and E6 to the technician and call service.

How a technician diagnoses error code E6

  1. Confirm E6 and the VC5 control.
  2. With power off, disconnect the output and check the wiring for a short.
  3. Inspect the board connector for moisture or grease.
  4. Test the board output with the wiring disconnected.
  5. Replace the board if the short is inside it.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Output wiring and the board are live control circuits in a gas oven.
  • Finding a short in wiring needs a meter and disconnecting the load.
  • Running an oven with a shorted output risks damaging the board further.

How error code E6 differs from similar codes

E6 is a shorted board output and E5 is no output; both name the temperature control board as the cause.
