Continental Girbau Washer Error Code ALn / VAR 0: Inverter Link Lost
ALn / VAR 0 means the inverter that drives the drum motor and the microprocessor are no longer communicating. Stop the cycle, let the drum come to rest and power the washer off at its disconnect for a minute before trying again. If the alarm returns, the washer needs a technician to check inverter power and the communication harness.
High: the washer stops and will not run until the inverter link is restored.

What does Continental Girbau error code ALn / VAR 0 mean?
The E-Series control splits the work between two boards. The microprocessor decides what the drum should do, and the inverter turns that instruction into motor speed. The two talk over a digital link, and the inverter also needs its own power supply before it can answer. When the microprocessor sends a command and gets no reply, it cannot know whether the drum is turning, so it stops the cycle and puts ALn / VAR 0 on the display. Older sheets print the same alarm as ALM / VAR 0. The manual lists four things behind this message: no power reaching the inverter, a damaged communication harness or dirty contacts, wrong dip switch settings on the inverter, or a failed inverter or microprocessor. The alarm does not say which end of the link went quiet, so power, fuses, the inverter relay and the harness come before any board is replaced.
Affected models and control systems
Continental Girbau E-Series washer-extractors with Logi, LogiPro or Vended control, covering the sheet names EH020, EM025, EH060, RMG055 and smaller. Other control generations use different codes.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Cycle stops with ALn / VAR 0 on the display
- Drum does not turn or ramp up
- Door stays locked until the washer is powered down
Possible causes
Listed in Continental Girbau's documentation
- Missing inverter power
- Damaged communication harness or contacts
- Wrong dip switch settings on the inverter
- Bad inverter or microprocessor
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code ALn / VAR 0 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Fuse or inverter relay that is not passing power at the start of a cycle
- Wire in the harness that backed out of its plug after years of drum vibration
- Dip switches changed during an earlier board swap
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press stop and wait until the drum is completely still and the door lock releases.
- Switch the washer off at its wall disconnect, wait one minute and switch it back on.
- Do not open panels or touch the harness. Note when the alarm appears (at power-up, at spin start or mid-cycle) and tell the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code ALn / VAR 0
- Read the alarm and confirm the machine type and control version against ST-101.
- Check the motor discharge resistor and the earth ground as listed in ST-112.
- Measure voltage at the inverter input, then test the fuses and the inverter relay.
- Inspect the communication harness, clean the contacts and reseat the wires.
- Verify the dip switches, and replace the inverter or microprocessor only after power and harness test good.
- The inverter holds stored charge and is fed with 208-240 V or higher, so the checks behind the panel are live electrical work.
- The alarm names the link, not which end stopped answering, and telling them apart takes a meter and the maker's test sequence.
- Dip switch settings must match the exact model, so guessing can leave the washer running on the wrong drive data.
How error code ALn / VAR 0 differs from similar codes
VAR 1 and VAR 2 also point to the inverter link but report how the loss was detected; VAR 0 is the plain loss of communication.

Can I keep using the washer with ALn / VAR 0?
No. The control cannot command the drum without the inverter, so the cycle will not complete. Take the washer out of service until it is checked.
Will the alarm clear by itself?
Powering off for a minute may let it restart once, for example after a brief supply dip. If the cause is a loose harness or a dead inverter supply, it will come back.
Is the inverter always the failed part?
No. The manual lists power, harness and dip switch causes ahead of a bad inverter, and those are far cheaper to fix.
