Continental Girbau Inteli Washer Error Code 40: Inverter Overload
Code 40 means the inverter current went above the programmed level. Let the washer cool, check for an overloaded drum or suds, and restart. If code 40 returns, a technician checks the basket, drain, inverter and motor.
High: the inverter stops the drive to protect the motor, so heavy cycles cannot finish.

What does Continental Girbau error code 40 mean?
The inverter has a programmed current limit for the drum motor. If the motor pulls more than that for too long, the inverter shuts down to protect the motor and itself, and the control displays 40 (Inverter overload). It is a slower reaction than the sudden overcurrent codes 5, 30, 31 and 32, and it most often shows up on a heavy load. The manual's checks cover what makes the motor work harder: basket movement, the drain valve, a clean inverter and a working fan, the dip switches, the motor bearings, the motor windings and the amp draw. The table names actions only, without a cause list. The dip switches matter here because they set what the inverter considers normal for this washer size, so a wrong setting can make a healthy motor look overloaded.
Affected models and control systems
Continental Girbau E-Series washer-extractors with Inteli control, sheet names RMG055 and smaller and EH060 and larger. Washers with Logi, LogiPro or Vended control use ALn alarms instead.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Code 40 on the display
- Cycle stops under a heavy load
- Motor and inverter warm after the stop
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 40 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Loads consistently above the rated capacity
- Dip switches set for a different washer size after a board swap
- Drain pump or valve restricted so the drum carries extra water
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press stop and wait until the drum has stopped turning.
- Open the door and check that the load is not above the rated capacity.
- Wait 30 minutes and restart with a lighter load.
- If the code repeats, note the load weight and program.
How a technician diagnoses error code 40
- Read the code and note the load and program.
- Check basket movement and the drain valve.
- Inspect the inverter and its fan.
- Verify the dip switch settings.
- Check the motor bearings, windings and amp draw.
- Amp draw and winding tests are done on live motor circuits.
- Dip switch settings define the safe limits for the model.
- Bearing checks mean opening the machine and handling the belt.
How error code 40 differs from similar codes
Code 40 is a slow overload. Codes 5, 30, 31 and 32 are fast overcurrent trips. Code 39 is the thermal relay overload.

What is the difference from code 39?
Code 39 is the inverter thermal relay overload. Code 40 is the current above the programmed level.
Can I run with a lighter load?
Yes, as a test. If it works, the load was the likely cause.
Is it the motor?
It could be, but the manual checks the load and settings first.
