Dexter Laundromat Washer Error Code F1: Door Lock Error
F1 (DOOR LOCK ERROR) on a Dexter coin washer means the door lock signal was not received within one second of the cycle start, even after three attempts, or the door failed to stay locked. The controller shuts off the lock solenoid and all outputs, so a paid cycle never starts. Do not pry the door or bypass any switch.
High: the washer cannot start a paid cycle and stays out of service until the lock works.

What does Dexter error code F1 mean?
A Dexter coin washer with a VFD, such as the T-450 Express, will not tumble a load until it knows the door is locked. When a cycle starts, the controller energizes the door lock and waits for the lock signal. If the signal does not arrive within one second, it tries again, up to three attempts. If it still does not see the lock, or if the door does not stay locked once the cycle is running, it shuts off the lock solenoid and all outputs and shows F1 (DOOR LOCK ERROR). The customer's paid cycle never gets going, which is why the attendant gets the call. The manual lists the door lock motor and solenoid, the door switch and lock switch wiring, the door adjustment and the VFD condition. A door that is not shut all the way, or something hanging out of it, is the simplest explanation and is the first thing to check.
Affected models and control systems
This page covers Dexter C-Series and T-series coin washers with a VFD, T-300 to T-1450. The same F1 code on a Dexter dryer means a temperature sensor short.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- F1 (DOOR LOCK ERROR) shows and the washer will not start
- The door does not lock or clicks without locking
- A paid cycle ends before it begins
Possible causes
Listed in Dexter's documentation
- A failed door lock motor or solenoid
- Damaged door switch or lock switch wiring
- A door that is out of adjustment
- A VFD problem
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A door striker that has shifted a few millimeters, so the latch does not seat
- A towel or clothing edge caught between the door and the seal
- A door lock switch that sticks from detergent residue and does not report that the door is locked
Safe checks before calling for service
- Do not pry the door or bypass any switch.
- Check that the door is shut all the way and nothing hangs out of it.
- Switch the washer off for a minute and let the customer try again.
- If F1 returns, put a sign on the washer and call us. Tell us whether the door felt loose.
How a technician diagnoses error code F1
- Read the code and count how many attempts occur at start.
- Check the door position, striker and seal.
- Test the lock solenoid or motor and the door and lock switch signals at the controller.
- Check the wiring and the VFD output readiness.
- Replace the part that fails its test, and then run a test cycle.
- The door lock is a safety interlock and must never be bypassed or forced.
- Lock and switch tests need access behind the front panel, with line-voltage wiring and VFD parts inside.
- Customers lose money until the washer is back in service, so the cause must be found and fixed properly.
How error code F1 differs from similar codes
The Dexter dryer shows an F1 for a temperature sensor short. The washer F1 is the door lock error.

Can I bypass the door switch to keep the washer running?
No. The lock is a safety interlock, and bypassing it is dangerous.
Why does a clothing edge cause F1?
If the door does not seat fully, the lock signal is not made, and the controller stops after three attempts.
Will F1 clear by itself?
It may after a power-off pause if the door was just not shut. If it returns, the lock or its wiring needs testing.
