Dexter Coin Dryer Error Code F2: Temperature Sensor Open

F2 on a Dexter coin dryer means the temperature sensor circuit is open, so the control cannot read heat. Power the dryer off, let it cool and clean the lint you can reach. If F2 comes back after one restart, take the dryer out of service and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the dryer will not dry normally, but the cause is a sensor circuit that is usually a modest repair.

What does Dexter error code F2 mean?

A Dexter T-series dryer control watches one thing above all: how hot the air is. It does this through a temperature probe that changes its electrical resistance with heat. The control applies a small voltage to the probe and measures what comes back. When the wire is broken, the plug has let go, or the probe has failed inside, nothing comes back, and the control sees an open circuit. It cannot tell whether the drum is cold or scorching, so it will not run the dryer in the normal way and shows F2. In a laundromat the first sign is usually a customer reporting that clothes came out damp after a full coin cycle, then an attendant spotting the code. The open circuit is the opposite of the shorted-sensor case, which the same control reports as F1, and the two need different tests. Because the drum shakes all day, a wire that is cracked inside its insulation can open and close as the dryer runs, so the code may seem to come and go before it settles in.

Affected models and control systems

Dexter T-30, T-50, T-80 and T-120 coin dryer controls. Other Dexter dryer controls number their messages differently.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The control shows F2 where the cycle should be
  • Clothes come out damp after a paid cycle
  • The dryer does not heat or stops early
  • The code clears after power-up and returns later

Possible causes

Listed in Dexter's documentation

  • Temperature probe open inside
  • Broken wire or loose plug at the probe
  • Probe wire broken by drum vibration
  • Control input misreading the probe as broken

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A probe lead that has been flexed at the same point for years until the copper strands separated
  • A connector that has corroded or loosened because it sits in warm, lint-laden air

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the dryer off at the disconnect and let it cool completely.
  2. Clean the lint screen and the lint area you can reach without tools.
  3. Do not pull on wires or open any panel.
  4. Switch power on once and see whether F2 returns.
  5. If it does, tag the dryer out of service and tell us how long it had been showing damp loads.

How a technician diagnoses error code F2

  1. Confirm F2 on the control and rule out an F1 or other message.
  2. With power off and locked out, measure the probe resistance at room temperature and compare it with its rating.
  3. Check the probe wiring and plug for breaks, flexing damage and corrosion.
  4. Measure the control input with the probe disconnected to see whether the control reads the open correctly.
  5. Replace the probe or harness only after the test, then run a full cycle and confirm drying heat.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The probe circuit is wired to the control and sits under a basket full of lint, so reaching it means opening panels near live wiring.
  • An open circuit and a shorted one need different resistance tests, which takes a meter and the probe's rated value.
  • A wire that breaks only when the drum shakes can pass a bench test, so it needs flexing under measurement.

How error code F2 differs from similar codes

F1 on the same control means the sensor is shorted; F2 means it is open. The tests and the usual causes differ.

F2Questions about Dexter error code F2
Will F2 clear on its own?

It may disappear after a restart if a wire is touching, but a probe that is truly open will bring it back as soon as the dryer runs.

Can a customer still use the dryer?

No. The control does not run it normally without a reading, and coins would be spent on damp loads.

Is F2 the same as F1?

No. F1 is a shorted sensor and F2 is an open one, and the repair path differs.
