Milnor Coin Washer-Extractor Error Code E5: Too Slow to Drain

E5 on a Milnor MCR coin washer-extractor means the water level was still being sensed 40 seconds after the drain began. Look at the floor drain first, because a backed-up drain looks exactly like a washer problem. If E5 returns after the drain halt ends, stop using the washer and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: one washer is out of use and holds water, but the rest of the laundry keeps running.

What does Milnor error code E5 mean?

A coin-operated Milnor washer-extractor with the 7-formula coin control watches its level switch whenever the drain valve opens. The controller expects the switch to report an empty drum within a set time. When 40 seconds pass after the drain started and the level is still made, the control concludes that the washer is draining too slowly and shows E5. It then enters a drain halt mode that can last up to 1800 seconds, which gives a partly blocked line time to clear on its own, and the attendant may clear the message once the water is gone. Customers find a drum still holding water and a heavy, wet load. The code describes a result, not one broken part, which is why the first look belongs at the floor drain.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Milnor MCR coin washer-extractor controller with the 7-formula coin control, described in technical reference MTCEIR01. Other Milnor controllers number their messages differently.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The drum still holds water long after the drain should have finished
  • The display shows E5 and the cycle will not move on to spin
  • Customers report a soaked, heavy load and a washer that seems stuck
  • Water standing at the floor drain near the machine

Possible causes

Listed in Milnor's documentation

  • Drain valve that opens only partly or sticks shut
  • Restriction in the floor drain or drain line
  • Level switch that keeps reporting water after the drum empties
  • Lint, coins or small items blocking the drain path

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E5 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Shared floor trench in a busy laundromat backing up when several washers drain at the same moment
  • Drain valve sluggish from years of lint and soap scum collecting around its seat
  • Level switch hose or fitting partly plugged, so the switch still senses pressure after the drum is empty

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look at the floor drain for backup and clear whatever you can reach from outside the washer.
  2. Never force the door while water is inside the drum.
  3. Let the drain halt finish, which can take up to 1800 seconds, then clear the message at the attendant key if your setup allows it.
  4. Run one test cycle and watch whether the water leaves within the first minute.
  5. If E5 returns, note which washer it was, how long the water sat and whether neighboring washers drain normally, then call us.

How a technician diagnoses error code E5

  1. Check the building drain and trench to separate a plumbing restriction from a washer problem.
  2. Watch the drain valve open and measure how fast the drum empties.
  3. Check the level switch and its tubing with the drum empty.
  4. Replace the valve or switch only after the test shows which one fails.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The drain valve and level switch sit behind panels that carry live 208 to 240 V wiring, which only a trained technician should open.
  • Telling a building drain restriction from a failing valve takes measured drain times, not a guess.

How error code E5 differs from similar codes

The E-P Plus control on the J-series machines reports a similar problem as the message TOO LONG TO DRAIN, while this E5 belongs to the coin controller.

E5Questions about Milnor error code E5
Can the attendant clear E5 and keep the washer running?

The maker says the attendant may clear the message after the drain halt. If the water drained normally, one more cycle is reasonable. A second E5 means the cause is still there.

Will E5 go away by itself?

The drain halt ends on its own after up to 1800 seconds, but that only lets the washer try again. It does not repair a restricted drain or a sticking valve.

Is a clogged floor drain enough to cause E5?

Yes. The controller only knows that water stayed in the drum.
