Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code HtA: High Temperature Alarm

HtA, High Temperature Alarm (HIGH AIR TEMP), on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means room temperature has stayed too high for longer than the alarm delay, which defaults to 60 minutes. Check the door and the product first, then call a technician if the room is not coming down.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the walk-in has been above its alarm limit for the full delay, so stored food may be at risk.

What does Bally error code HtA mean?

The SmartVap+ controller compares the room temperature with a limit it builds from three settings: ROOM TEMP, AIR TEMP DIFF and HIGH TEMP ALARM OFFSET, whose default is 10 F. If the temperature stays above that limit for longer than the HIGH TEMP ALARM DELAY, which defaults to 60 minutes, it raises the High Temperature Alarm and shows HtA, with HIGH AIR TEMP on the display. The delay prevents short warm-ups, such as a delivery or a long door opening, from raising the alarm. The manual lists the alarm and that trigger and gives no repair steps. The alarm is about the room, not about one failed part: it tells you the walk-in has been warm for a while, and the reason could be anything from an open door to a cooling problem.

Affected models and control systems

The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, on Bally walk-in evaporators. The default 10 F offset and 60-minute delay come from the manual and can be changed in the settings.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • HtA or HIGH AIR TEMP in the active alarm list
  • The walk-in feels warm and product temperatures rise
  • The light is red or yellow depending on the controller's alarm class

Possible causes

Listed in Bally's documentation

  • Room temperature above ROOM TEMP + AIR TEMP DIFF + HIGH TEMP ALARM OFFSET (default 10 F) for longer than the HIGH TEMP ALARM DELAY

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code HtA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Door held open or not sealing during a delivery or restocking
  • Heavy warm product load added faster than the unit can pull it down
  • Coil iced up, reducing airflow and cooling
  • Compressor or condensing unit not running, so the evaporator has no refrigerant

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the door is fully shut and the gasket is sealing, and that nothing is propping it open.
  2. Check for a recent delivery or a large amount of warm product and allow time for recovery.
  3. Look at the evaporator for fans running and heavy ice, without opening panels.
  4. Move high-risk food to a working cooler if the room stays warm, and note the room temperature and light color for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code HtA

  1. Read active alarms and history, noting other alarms such as ASA, dor or dtt.
  2. Confirm real room temperature with a reference thermometer.
  3. Check the door, strip curtain and gaskets, then the evaporator fans and coil condition.
  4. Check whether the condensing unit is running and the refrigerant circuit's pressures and superheat.
  5. Correct the cause, clear alarms and confirm the room returns to setpoint.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Finding why the room is warm may need refrigerant gauges and work on the condensing unit, which need certification.
  • Condensing units and compressors run on high-voltage supply and are not for operator access.

How error code HtA differs from similar codes

HtA is high room temperature, LtA is low room temperature, and dor is a door-open alarm that also depends on warming.

HtAQuestions about Bally error code HtA
Is HtA the same as the door alarm?

No. HtA is any sustained high room temperature, while the door alarm needs the door open and a smaller temperature rise.

How long before HtA appears?

The manual's default delay is 60 minutes above the limit, but the setting may have been changed.

Will it clear once the room cools?

The manual says Clear Alarms clears active alarms. If the room is still warm, HtA will come back.
