Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code EA2: External Alarm 2

EA2, External Alarm 2, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means external alarm input 2 is active. The manual says it appears when AU2 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM and the digital input is active. Check what is connected to that second input.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the alarm reports an external input, and the walk-in itself may be cooling normally.

What does Bally error code EA2 mean?

The second auxiliary input on SmartVap+ works in the same way as the first but on its own terminals. When AU2 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM, the controller lets an outside device raise an alarm through that input, and when the input is in its active state the controller shows EA2. Because this is an input rather than a measurement, the alarm is only as informative as the device behind it. It could come from a remote safety contact, a water sensor, a power relay or a monitoring panel, and the manual does not say which of these is wired to input 2. What the manual does state is the exact trigger: the mode setting, plus an active input. If the input mode were changed to something else, the alarm would stop being possible. So the checks are the connected device, the wiring and the setting.

Affected models and control systems

The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, on Bally walk-in evaporators. It applies only where AU2 IN MODE is set to EXT ALARM.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • EA2 shows in the active alarm list
  • The alarm light is on while cooling looks normal
  • A separate monitoring panel may also show an alarm

Possible causes

Listed in Bally's documentation

  • AU2 IN MODE set to EXT ALARM and the digital input is in an active state

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EA2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • The device on input 2 has tripped, such as a leak or high-water contact
  • Wire to the input pinched or disconnected, reading as active
  • Input polarity set opposite to what the connected contact needs
  • A second alarm contact added by another contractor and never documented

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Ask who wired the second external input and what the device is, such as a leak sensor or panel relay.
  2. Look at the device, without opening any electrical box, for an indicator or visible condition such as water on the floor.
  3. Try Clear Alarms (CLA, press and hold) once and see whether EA2 returns.
  4. Note the room temperature and the device name for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code EA2

  1. Read active alarms and check the AU2 input mode setting.
  2. Identify the connected device and its current state.
  3. Measure the input at the terminals in both conditions.
  4. Check the wiring and the contact type, normally open or normally closed.
  5. Fix the device or wiring, or correct the setting, then clear the alarm and watch it stay clear.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The input wiring leads out of the evaporator housing to devices that may be on line-voltage circuits.
  • Whether an input is a real alarm or a leftover contact is a decision that needs the site's wiring records.

How error code EA2 differs from similar codes

EA2 belongs to the AU2 input. EA1 and EA3 are the same alarm on inputs 1 and 3, so check which number you see.

EA2Questions about Bally error code EA2
Is EA2 different from EA1?

Only by the input. EA2 comes from the AU2 input, and EA1 from AU1, each with its own mode setting.

Does EA2 mean the walk-in is too warm?

No. The manual ties it to an active external input, not a temperature.

Why does it return after clearing?

If the connected device is still in its active state, the input stays active and the alarm comes back.
