Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code dtt: Defrost Terminated on Time

Dtt, Defrost Terminated on Time Alarm, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means defrost ended on the timer instead of on coil temperature for two cycles in a row. The manual lists the trigger only. Look for coil ice and call a technician.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: defrost is ending on its timer, which can leave ice on the coil and reduce cooling.

What does Bally error code Dtt mean?

A defrost can end two ways: when the coil sensor reports that the coil is warm enough, or when a safety timer runs out. Ending on temperature is the normal, efficient way. SmartVap+ watches how each defrost ends, and when two defrosts in a row end on time rather than temperature, it raises the Defrost Terminated on Time Alarm and shows dtt. The manual lists the alarm and that trigger only and gives no repair steps. What it implies is that the coil never reached its termination temperature before the timer stopped the cycle, so ice may not have fully melted, or the coil sensor is not reporting accurately. The alarm will therefore sometimes appear with CSA, the coil sensor alarm, and sometimes on its own.

What you may notice

  • Dtt shows in the active alarm list
  • Ice remains on the coil after defrost
  • Airflow drops and the room warms between defrosts

Possible causes

Listed in Bally's documentation

  • Defrost terminated on time instead of temperature for two consecutive cycles

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Dtt on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Defrost heater element weak or open, so the coil never reaches the termination temperature
  • Coil sensor sitting away from the coil or reading low
  • Heavy ice load or a blocked drain keeping the coil cold
  • Defrost termination temperature set higher than the coil can reach

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look at the coil through any viewing area for ice left after defrost, but do not chip it.
  2. Check that the door is closing fully and water is not entering the room.
  3. Scroll active alarms and note whether CSA or EdF are listed too.
  4. Tell the technician how long the ice has been building and the room temperature trend.

How a technician diagnoses error code Dtt

  1. Read defrost history and see if dtt appears with CSA or EdF.
  2. Observe a full defrost cycle and note where it ends and at what coil temperature.
  3. Check heater element current and the coil sensor's position and resistance.
  4. Check the drain line and heater trace for blockage or freezing.
  5. Repair the heater or sensor as tested, clear the alarm and watch a defrost end on temperature.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Heater elements and their wiring run at line voltage inside the evaporator housing.
  • Judging defrost termination needs a technician to watch a full cycle and read the controller's own data.

How error code Dtt differs from similar codes

Dtt reports how defrost ended. EdF counts too many defrosts, and CSA reports the coil sensor itself.

DttQuestions about Bally error code Dtt
Is dtt a serious alarm?

It signals that defrost may not be clearing the coil. Left alone, ice can grow and cut cooling.

Does dtt mean the heater has failed?

It may, but the manual only says defrost ended on time. A sensor or a heavy ice load can cause it too.

Can I clear it myself?

You can try Clear Alarms, but if defrost still ends on time, dtt will return.
