Montague Induction Range Codes E04, E41-E46: Zone Overheated
E04, E41 to E46 on a Montague Legend induction range, or four short flashes, mean the cooking zone is overheated or its sensor has failed. The unit stops working immediately. Let the unit, the cookware and the room cool, check the pan, and call a technician if it persists.
High: the unit stops immediately and the zone will not heat until it cools or the sensor is repaired.
What does Montague error code E04 / E41 / E42 / E43 / E44 / E45 / E46 mean?
Each induction zone has a temperature sensor that watches the zone. If the zone gets too hot, or if the sensor itself is not working, the control shuts the unit down at once and shows E04, or one of E41 to E46, or four short flashes on the lamp. The manual's troubleshooting chart on page 13 gives the meaning as the cooking zone overheated or its sensor unit has failed, and says the unit stops working immediately. In its causes column it lists an overheated cooking zone, a sensor unit failure, or an overheated or defective sensor. The extracted text of the chart shows no corrective-action entry for this row. The induction note on page 9 does say to check the pan material and size, to let the unit, cookware and ambient cool, and to call a service provider if it continues. We have followed that note here.
Affected models and control systems
Montague Legend electric ranges with induction units: V136EO-4I, C36-4I, RB-36-SC/R, 36-4I and M36-4I. The manual lists E04 with E41 to E46 in the Troubleshooting Chart on page 13, with an induction note on page 9.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- E04 or E41 to E46 shows, or the lamp gives four short flashes
- The zone shuts off while cooking
- A pan left empty or dry has just been on the zone
Possible causes
Listed in Montague's documentation
- Overheated cooking zone
- Sensor unit failure
- Overheated or defective sensor
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E04 / E41 / E42 / E43 / E44 / E45 / E46 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Empty or dry pan left on the zone, overheating the glass
- Pan too small or poorly matched, creating a hot spot
- Sensor shorted or open so the control cannot read the zone
- Hot ambient kitchen air limiting how fast the zone can shed heat
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the unit off, remove the pan and let the zone, the pan and the room cool.
- Check the pan material and size against the manual's induction note, and use a pan that suits the zone.
- Never heat an empty pan on an induction zone.
- Restart once. If the code returns on a cool zone with a good pan, note which zone and the code number for the service call.
How a technician diagnoses error code E04 / E41 / E42 / E43 / E44 / E45 / E46
- Read the exact code, E04 or E41 to E46, and note the zone.
- Retest on a cool zone with a known good pan.
- Inspect the zone's sensor and its connector for heat marks or a loose plug, with the unit isolated.
- Measure the sensor against its specification at room temperature.
- Replace the sensor or module only if the test fails, then run a heating test and confirm normal shutoff behavior.
- The sensor sits under the glass in a live-supply appliance, so reaching it means isolating and opening the range.
- The manual gives no operator reset for this code, and repeated restarts risk damage to a hot zone.
How error code E04 / E41 / E42 / E43 / E44 / E45 / E46 differs from similar codes
E04 and E41 to E46 are one message family, and the manual does not explain the extra numbers. E03 is the heat sink and E06 is ambient or internal heat.
