Montague Range Error Code E29: Cooking-Empty Sensor Warning

E29 on a Montague induction range means the cooking-empty sensor is warning that the pan is empty, or that the coil connection has failed. The manual says the unit stops working immediately. Check the pan first; if it holds food and E29 returns, a technician must check the coil connection.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the zone stops at once, but the usual cause is an empty pan the operator can correct.

What does Montague error code E29 mean?

An induction range heats the pan itself, so the control watches for conditions where energy has nothing to go into. One of those checks is the cooking-empty sensor. When it decides the pan is empty, or when the connection to the heating coil has failed, the control raises the warning and shows E29, or gives 7 short flashes on the indicator lamp when no numeric display is used. The manual describes the result as an immediate stop: the zone does not keep heating while the warning is active. It lists two causes only, an empty pan or no food in it, and a failed coil connection. The first is something a cook can see and correct in seconds. The second is inside the cooking surface and is a service matter.

What you may notice

  • The zone stops heating right away
  • E29 on the display, or 7 short flashes on the indicator lamp
  • A pan sitting on the zone that stays cold

Possible causes

Listed in Montague's documentation

  • Empty pan, or no food in the pan
  • Coil connection failed

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E29 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A thin or warped pan that the sensor reads as empty even with food in it
  • Food spread so thinly, or liquid boiled away so fully, that the pan reads as dry mid-cook
  • A pan left on a zone that was switched on by mistake

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch the zone off and remove the pan.
  2. Look at the pan: if it is empty or nearly dry, add food or liquid before using the zone again.
  3. Place the pan flat and centered, then switch the zone on and see whether E29 or the 7 flashes come back.
  4. If the warning returns with food in the pan, stop using that zone. Note whether it happened with every pan or only one, and whether it appears at once or after minutes.

How a technician diagnoses error code E29

  1. Ask what pan was in use and whether it held food when the warning appeared.
  2. Repeat the condition with a known-good induction pan holding water, to separate a pan problem from a range problem.
  3. With power off and locked out, inspect the coil leads and their connectors for a loose, burned or pulled terminal.
  4. Check coil continuity with a meter against the specification for the unit.
  5. Reseat or replace the failed coil connection, then run a full heat test with the pan loaded.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The coil leads sit under the cooking surface on the same supply as the other induction electronics, so the range must be locked out before anything is opened.
  • Judging whether a coil connection has truly failed takes meter readings on high-power induction hardware.
  • The manual points to a service agency for this code, and a wrong repair here can damage the control.

How error code E29 differs from similar codes

On this range E29 comes as a pair: a cooking-empty sensor warning, or a coil connection failure. Other codes in the same chart point to internal sensors or electronics.

E29Questions about Montague error code E29
Can I keep cooking with E29 showing?

The manual says the unit stops working immediately, so the zone will not heat while the warning is active.

Will E29 clear if I add food to the pan?

The manual lists an empty pan as a cause and tells you to check the pan for food. If it was only that, the code should not return after you restart.

What does 7 short flashes mean?

On units that show a lamp flash pattern instead of a number, 7 short flashes is the same warning as E29.
