Polar King Walk-In Cooler Error Code EXT ALARM: Input Active

EXT ALARM means a digital input on the controller, one that has been set to external-alarm mode, is currently active. The manual lists the alarm and its trigger but gives no repair steps. First find out what device is wired to that input and whether it is signaling a real condition, then clear the alarm from the menu once the condition is gone.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the manual states only the trigger, and what it means depends on the device wired to the input.

What does Polar King EXT ALARM mean?

The KE2 evaporator controller has digital inputs that can be assigned different jobs. One of the available modes is EXT ALARM, which turns the input into an alarm line for some outside device. While the controller sees that input in its active state, it raises the alarm. On the Combo Display the text EXT ALARM appears in the Alarms menu. On the Basic Display there is no text, only a red or yellow alarm light. The manual describes this entry in the view-only Alarms Status menu and states only the trigger: a digital input set to EXT ALARM mode is active. It does not say what the input is connected to, since that depends on the installation. The controller is passing on a signal from something else.

Affected models and control systems

Polar King walk-in coolers and freezers using the KE2 Evaporator Efficiency Evap OEM board, with either the Basic Display or the Combo Display. Only the Combo Display shows the alarm name; the Basic Display shows a red or yellow light.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Red or yellow alarm light on a Basic Display
  • EXT ALARM listed in the Alarms menu of a Combo Display
  • The alarm stays listed until it is cleared or the input returns to normal

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind EXT ALARM on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A digital input set to EXT ALARM mode is in an active state
  • The outside device wired to the input (a switch or alarm contact added during installation) has tripped
  • A contact left open or closed after other work on the walk-in
  • An input assigned to EXT ALARM that was meant for a different job

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Walk around the cooler area and look for anything an alarm switch might be watching, such as an open door or a tripped outside device.
  2. Look at the display. On a Combo Display open the Alarms menu and confirm EXT ALARM is the only entry.
  3. If the condition is gone, use the CLEAR ALARMS item in the manual menu to clear the alarm, as the manual describes.
  4. Write down whether the alarm returns right away or only at certain times, and which device you found, for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses EXT ALARM

  1. Read the active alarm list and confirm which digital input is configured as EXT ALARM.
  2. Trace that input to the device wired to it, then measure the input with a meter to see whether the contact is open or closed, and compare it with the expected state for that device.
  3. Correct the outside device or the wiring, then clear the alarm and watch that it stays clear.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Tracing the input means opening the controller or junction box and measuring control wiring, which should not be done on a live walk-in by an operator.
  • The input mode is a controller setting that changes what the alarm means, so it should be reviewed only by someone who knows how the walk-in was set up.

How EXT ALARM differs from similar codes

On the Basic Display the same alarm appears only as a red or yellow light, so the cause cannot be read from the screen the way it can on the Combo Display.

EXT ALARMQuestions about Polar King EXT ALARM
Can I keep using the walk-in with EXT ALARM showing?

The manual does not say cooling stops. Check the box temperature and what the outside device monitors.

Will EXT ALARM clear on its own?

The manual says alarms can be cleared with the CLEAR ALARMS menu item, and it does not describe automatic clearing for this one. Clear it only after the condition is gone.

Is EXT ALARM the same as the email or SNTP alarms?

No. Those report network communication problems. EXT ALARM comes from a wired digital input.
