Vulcan Gas Convection Oven Error Code E2: Shorted Temperature Probe

E2 on a Vulcan-Hart gas convection oven with the VC5 control means a shorted temperature probe. The manual tells you to call your service representative and quote the error number.

Medium · inspection needed

High: with no usable temperature reading the oven should stay off until the probe circuit is repaired.

What does Vulcan error code E2 mean?

E2 is the shorted counterpart of E1. The VC5 control reads the oven temperature probe, and when the probe circuit is shorted, the resistance drops to a value the control cannot accept as a real temperature, so it shows E2 on the temperature display. Two causes are listed: the temperature probe itself, or the temperature control board. A short can come from wires that have touched each other, insulation burned by oven heat, or moisture in the probe. The control cannot regulate heat with that reading. The manual's action is to contact a service representative and give the error number, so state E2 when you call. A technician checks the probe and the wiring first, since that is the easier test, and replaces the board only if the probe circuit is normal.

Affected models and control systems

Vulcan-Hart gas convection ovens with the VC5 control, which shows E and a number on the temperature display. The cover lists VC4GD, VC4GC, VC6GD, VC6GC, HGC5/HGC5D(X) and WKGD, so confirm the control label says VC5.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E2 on the temperature display
  • Oven not heating or heating wrongly
  • Temperature display missing or odd
  • Cooking results that vary

Possible causes

Listed in Vulcan's documentation

  • Temperature probe failure
  • Temperature control board failure

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Probe insulation damaged by heat so the wires touch
  • Moisture inside the probe body
  • A board input for the probe that reads short

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the oven off and let it cool.
  2. Restart the oven once to see whether E2 returns.
  3. Do not open the control cover or handle wires.
  4. Note the model and the display and call service.

How a technician diagnoses error code E2

  1. Confirm E2 and the VC5 control.
  2. With power off, inspect the probe lead for damage and touching wires.
  3. Measure the probe resistance and look for a near-zero reading.
  4. Test the wiring and the board input.
  5. Replace the probe first, then the board if the short remains.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The probe wiring runs near live oven controls and gas parts.
  • A resistance test needs a meter and probe values.
  • Running an oven with a bad temperature reading is unsafe.

How error code E2 differs from similar codes

E2 is a shorted probe and E1 is an open probe, both with the same two causes in the VC5 table.

E2Questions about Vulcan error code E2
What is the difference between E1 and E2?

E1 is an open probe circuit. E2 is a shorted probe circuit.

Could the board be the cause?

Yes. The manual lists the temperature control board as the second cause.

Should I keep using the oven?

No. The control cannot read the temperature correctly.
