Southbend EZ Com Oven Error Code Err Pr:0b: RTD Probe Open or Shorted
Err with Pr:0b on a Southbend EZ Com combination oven means at least one RTD probe is open or shorted. The manual says to fix the probe problem and turn the unit off and on. A technician should check the probes and wiring.
High: with a probe reading lost, the oven cannot regulate its temperature.

What does Southbend error code Err + Pr:0b mean?
An RTD is a probe whose resistance changes predictably with temperature. The EZ Com oven uses RTD probes so the controller knows the temperature in the cavity. If a probe circuit is open, the resistance reads infinite, and if it is shorted, it reads near zero. Either way, the controller cannot get a believable temperature. It shows Err in the TEMPERATURE display and Pr:0b in the TIME display. The manual says at least one probe is affected, which means more than one may be, and it gives no further steps beyond fixing the probe problem and turning the unit off and on. The display does not say which probe or which state, so a technician measures each probe and its wiring.
Affected models and control systems
Southbend EZ Com combination ovens CG/12SC and CG/22SC.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Err shows in the TEMPERATURE display and Pr:0b in the TIME display
- The oven stops heating
- The temperature display is blank or wrong
- The code returns after power-up
Possible causes
Listed in Southbend's documentation
- Open RTD probe
- Shorted RTD probe
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Err + Pr:0b on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A probe connector loosened by heat cycling and cleaning
- A probe lead damaged by steam or by being bent during cleaning
Safe checks before calling for service
- Turn the oven off and let it cool completely.
- Look inside the cavity for a bent or damaged probe, without touching it.
- Turn the oven on once to see whether Pr:0b returns.
- If it does, note the model and call us without opening any panel.
How a technician diagnoses error code Err + Pr:0b
- Read the code and confirm Err and Pr:0b.
- Identify which RTD probes the oven has.
- Measure each probe's resistance against expected values at room temperature.
- Check each lead and connector for an open or a short.
- Repair the wiring or replace the probe that fails.
- Cycle the power and confirm the code is gone.
- RTD resistance tests are done with the oven powered down.
- Probe leads run through the cavity wall near heat.
- Telling an open from a short, and which probe, needs measurements against known values, and the oven is run through a heating cycle after the repair to prove the readings are steady.
How error code Err + Pr:0b differs from similar codes
Pr:0b is a probe problem, unlike CP:U, bu:tn, FA:n and GA:S.

What is an RTD?
A resistance temperature probe. Its resistance changes with temperature.
Why does it say at least one probe?
More than one probe may be open or shorted, so each is tested.
Can I keep cooking?
No. The controller cannot run safely without a believable temperature.
