True Refrigerator Error Code LEA: Danfoss ERC Refrigerant Leakage Alarm

LEA is the refrigerant leakage alarm on a True cabinet with a Danfoss ERC control. It means the compressor has run longer without a break than the control expects. Check that doors are shut, test product temperature, and if LEA stays on or the cabinet is warm, move food and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

High: a compressor running continuously can fail and put the food load at risk.

What does True error code LEA mean?

The ERC control tracks how long the compressor runs without stopping. If it runs longer than the control expects, it raises LEA, which can mean the system is losing refrigerant or is simply overloaded. A cabinet that shows LEA may still be cooling, but it is working hard without winning. Left alone it can burn out the compressor and put the whole load of food at risk. A real leak is one possible cause, but so are things that load the system: a dirty condenser, a stalled condenser fan, doors opened often, a heavy warm load, or an iced evaporator that cannot absorb heat. The alarm timer can also be set shorter than the cabinet needs. A technician rules out the easy airflow causes first, then checks the sealed system for a leak.

What you may notice

  • LEA on the display
  • Compressor running continuously
  • Cabinet warm or slow to recover
  • Ice on the evaporator

Possible causes

Listed in True's documentation

  • A refrigerant leak somewhere in the sealed system
  • Dirty condenser or a stalled condenser fan
  • Doors open often or a heavy warm load
  • Evaporator coil iced up so heat cannot be absorbed
  • Alarm timer set shorter than the cabinet needs

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code LEA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A condenser fan motor that has seized in a hot kitchen
  • A door gasket that leaks warm air all shift
  • A defrost problem that leaves the coil iced between cleanings

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the doors are shut and nothing is blocking them.
  2. Hold a thermometer against a few items and note how warm they are.
  3. Clear lint from the condenser area if it is easy to reach.
  4. If LEA stays on or the cabinet is warm, move food to another cooler and call us.
  5. Tell us how long the compressor has been running without a break.

How a technician diagnoses error code LEA

  1. Read the code and check cabinet temperature.
  2. Inspect the condenser coil and fan for blockage.
  3. Check door seals and defrost, and look for an iced evaporator.
  4. Check the alarm timer setting.
  5. Use gauges and a leak detector on the sealed system.
  6. Repair the leak, recover and recharge, then confirm the compressor cycles off.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Finding a leak needs gauges and a leak detector, and refrigerant must be recovered by an EPA-certified technician.
  • Running a compressor low on refrigerant can damage it.
  • Compressor and fan circuits carry full line voltage.

LEAQuestions about True error code LEA
Does LEA always mean a leak?

No. It means the compressor has run too long, which a leak can cause but so can a dirty condenser or heavy load.

Can I keep running the cabinet?

Only if food stays cold. If it is warm, move it, since the compressor may be working too hard.

Can I adjust the timer?

No. A longer timer would hide a real problem, so leave it to a technician.
