Douglas Machines Pot and Pan Washer Error: PGM LED 1 Flash

One flash of the PGM light, then a pause of about three seconds, means the fill timed out. The fill valve stayed on for 15 minutes without the water reaching the level probe, so the fill was aborted. Check the supply valve and drain valve, and clean the probe and float switch.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the machine will not fill or wash until it is corrected, but daily cleaning often resolves it.

What does Douglas Machines PGM LED 1 flash mean?

Older Douglas washers with the 1827 PC board do not show a code number. Instead the PGM light flashes a pattern, and the number of flashes before the three-second pause is the message. One flash is the fill timeout. When a fill begins, the board opens the fill valve and waits for the water to reach the level probe. If the valve has been on for 15 minutes and the probe still has not seen water, the board gives up, shuts the fill and starts flashing once. The board has been in use since 1999, which means many of these machines are old and have collected scale and grease on the probe and valve. The maker's causes read like a walk along the water path: the supply pressure and valve, the fill valve and its strainer, a drain valve that is left open or leaking, and a level probe so dirty the board cannot see the water that is there. That last point deserves emphasis. The probe and float switch need cleaning every day, according to the maker, and a tank that is full while the light flashes once is almost always a probe that needs a wipe. The machine must not be left heating with no water.

Affected models and control systems

Douglas door-type pot, pan and utensil washers such as the LD-10, LD-20, SD-10 and SD-20 with the 1827 PC board in use since 1999. Machines with the digital touch pad show Er codes instead.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • The PGM light flashes once, pauses about three seconds, and repeats
  • The tank is empty or only part full
  • The fill valve may run for a long time
  • The cycle will not start

Possible causes

Listed in Douglas Machines's documentation

  • Low water supply pressure or supply valve not fully open
  • Fill valve or its strainer restricted
  • Drain valve left open or leaking
  • Level probe too dirty for the board to see the water

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind PGM LED 1 flash on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Scale in the fill valve strainer that restricts flow to a trickle
  • A probe whose tip is covered with a film that stops the board sensing water

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Count the flashes of the PGM light carefully, with the pause between groups.
  2. Look at the water supply valve to confirm it is open, and make sure the drain valve is closed.
  3. Clean the float switch and level probe, which the maker says need cleaning every day.
  4. Do not leave the machine heating with no water in the tank. If one flash returns, call us.
  5. Tell us whether the tank was empty or full when the light flashed.

How a technician diagnoses PGM LED 1 flash

  1. Confirm the pattern is one flash, not a longer group.
  2. Check the actual tank level and the drain valve seal.
  3. Measure supply pressure and clean the fill valve strainer.
  4. Clean the level probe and confirm the board sees it wet in a full tank.
  5. Test the fill valve coil and its output at the 1827 board.
  6. Repair the part found and run a fill to confirm it completes before the time limit.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Fill valve coils and the probe wiring carry live voltage.
  • Timing a fill and measuring pressure takes a gauge and a watched cycle.
  • Running the heater with no water burns out the elements.

How PGM LED 1 flash differs from similar codes

Two flashes on the same board is the opposite problem: the fill ran too long after water reached the probe.

PGM LED 1 flashQuestions about Douglas Machines PGM LED 1 flash
How do I count the flashes?

Count the blinks before the three-second pause, then watch it repeat to be sure.

Why 15 minutes?

That is how long the fill valve can stay on before the board aborts the fill.

The tank is full. Why one flash?

A dirty probe can fail to sense water, so clean it before anything else.
