Douglas Machines Pot and Pan Washer Error: PGM LED 3 Flashes
Three flashes of the PGM light, then a pause, mean the master control relay was lost during a machine cycle. The door was opened or the motor overloads opened during the wash or rinse. Check that the door closes fully, let a stopped pump cool, and never hold the door switch closed.
Medium: a safety device opened and the cycle stopped, and the cause is often the door but may be the pump.

What does Douglas Machines PGM LED 3 flashes mean?
The 1827 board in an older Douglas washer powers the pump and the heater through a master control relay. That relay depends on a chain of safety devices wired in series: the door switch and the motor overloads. If any of them opens during a wash or rinse, the relay drops out, and the board sees its master control power vanish in the middle of the cycle. It reports this with three flashes of the PGM light. The message does not say which device opened, only that the chain was broken, so the maker's list begins with the two ordinary reasons: the door was opened during the cycle, or a motor overload opened on the pump. A door switch that flickers as the machine vibrates, or loose wiring and worn contacts in the control circuit, can open the chain with no one touching the door. That is why a code that appears when nobody opened the door deserves more than a restart. If the pump stopped, it may have overheated and tripped its overload, so let the motor cool before any restart. Holding the door switch closed to get past the message defeats a safety device and is never an option.

What you may notice
- The PGM light flashes three times, pauses, and repeats
- The wash or rinse stops partway
- The pump may be silent and hot
- The message appears without the door being opened
Possible causes
Listed in Douglas Machines's documentation
- Door opened during the cycle
- Pump motor overload opened
- Door switch contacts flickering
- Worn wiring or contacts in the control circuit
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind PGM LED 3 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A door switch whose contacts are pitted so it opens when the machine shakes
- A loose terminal in the safety chain that heats up and opens under load
Safe checks before calling for service
- Count three flashes with the pause between groups.
- Check that the door closes fully and nothing holds it partly open.
- If the pump stopped, let the motor cool before any restart.
- If three flashes return without anyone opening the door, call us. Never hold the door switch closed.
- Tell us whether the pump felt hot.
How a technician diagnoses PGM LED 3 flashes
- Confirm three flashes and note whether it occurs in wash or rinse.
- Check the door fit and the switch operation.
- With power off and locked out, test continuity through each device in the safety chain.
- Check the pump overload and the motor current under load.
- Inspect terminals and contacts in the control circuit for heat marks and looseness.
- Replace the failed device and run a complete cycle.
- The safety chain carries the full control voltage through the door switch and the overloads.
- Finding which device opened takes continuity tests with the power locked out.
- A pump that tripped may have a failing motor that needs a current reading.

Does three flashes mean the door was opened?
Often, but the motor overloads in the same chain can also open.
Can I hold the door switch closed?
Never. It is a safety device and the machine uses hot, high-pressure water.
Why does it happen mid-cycle?
Because the board noticed the master control power drop out while the machine was already running.
