Douglas Machines Pot and Pan Washer Error: PGM LED 5 Flashes
Five flashes of the PGM light, then a pause, mean an EEPROM read error: the two stored copies of the settings do not match. It can happen if a Fill cycle was started without a Teach cycle, or after a new board was installed. Do not try to reprogram it; call us.
High: the machine cannot trust its stored water level and will not run until it is taught correctly.

What does Douglas Machines PGM LED 5 flashes mean?
The 1827 board in an older Douglas washer keeps its settings in a small memory chip called an EEPROM, and it keeps two copies so it can detect damage. The most important stored setting is the water level the machine was taught during setup. At start-up the board reads both copies. If they do not agree, it cannot know which one to believe, and it flashes the PGM light five times. The machine cannot rely on its stored water level, so it will not run. The maker names two situations that produce this. One is a Fill cycle started before a Teach cycle was ever done, so the memory was never written properly. The other is a new board that has just been installed and has not yet been taught the machine. A power problem that damages the memory has the same effect, and a board that is failing can corrupt its own memory. Unlike a dirty probe or an open drain, nothing on the wet side of the machine is wrong, so cleaning will not help. The Teach cycle has to be done in the right order and on the right machine, which is why it is a job for a technician with the maker's procedure.

What you may notice
- The PGM light flashes five times, pauses, and repeats
- The machine will not fill or wash
- The message appeared after a board change or setup
- The tank may be dry
Possible causes
Listed in Douglas Machines's documentation
- Teach cycle not done after a board change
- Fill cycle started before the machine was taught
- Board memory damaged by a power problem
- Failed board
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind PGM LED 5 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A recent power surge that corrupted one of the two memory copies
- A used replacement board that arrived with another machine's stored level
Safe checks before calling for service
- Count five flashes with the pause between groups.
- Note whether a board was recently replaced or the machine was set up lately.
- Do not try to reprogram the board yourself.
- Call us. The Teach cycle has to be done correctly, and we do it on a visit.
- Tell us about any recent outage or storm.
How a technician diagnoses PGM LED 5 flashes
- Confirm five flashes and ask about recent board changes or setup work.
- Check supply quality at the board.
- Run the Teach cycle with the tank in the correct state, following the maker's order of steps.
- Confirm the two stored copies now agree and the machine fills to the right level.
- If the error returns, replace the board and teach the new one.
- Run a full cycle to verify.
- The Teach cycle has to be run in the right order with the right water level, or the board stores a wrong level.
- Memory on the 1827 board cannot be repaired in the field, only taught or replaced.
- The board carries live voltage behind the control panel.

What is a Teach cycle?
It is the setup in which the board learns the machine's water level. It must be done before a normal Fill.
Will cleaning the probe help?
Not for this message. The problem is in the stored settings, not the wet side.
Is the board broken?
Not necessarily. A missing Teach cycle after a board change is a common reason.
