Douglas Machines Pot and Pan Washer Error: PGM LED 7 Flashes
Seven flashes of the PGM light, then a pause, mean someone tried to start a machine cycle without water to the level probe, so the tank is not full enough to start. Check that the tank has water and the drain valve is closed. If the tank is full and the probe is clean but the flashes return, call us.
Medium: the machine will not start until the tank level is right, which is often a quick fix.

What does Douglas Machines PGM LED 7 flashes mean?
Before a wash can begin, the 1827 board in an older Douglas washer wants to see water at the level probe, since the heater and pump both need a full tank to work safely. If a cycle is requested and the probe does not report water, the board refuses to start and flashes the PGM light seven times. It is the start-up version of the low-water check: it happens before anything runs, not during the wash. In most kitchens the cause is the same as it sounds. The tank was never filled, the water was drained after cleaning and not replaced, or the drain valve was left open so the water ran out. The maker also lists a fill valve or supply problem, which means the tank cannot fill even when the operator does everything right, and a level probe so dirty that it reads dry in a full tank. For that last case, the maker's pointer is to its Low Water section, which covers a machine that has water and a clean low-water probe. The probe and float switch are part of the daily cleaning routine for exactly this reason, and a quick wipe often ends the message. The machine should never be forced to heat with an empty tank.
Affected models and control systems
Douglas door-type pot, pan and utensil washers with the 1827 PC board in use since 1999. Pad-type machines show Er05 for a similar condition.

What you may notice
- The PGM light flashes seven times, pauses, and repeats
- The cycle will not start
- The tank is empty or low
- The tank is full but the machine acts as if it is dry
Possible causes
Listed in Douglas Machines's documentation
- Tank not filled before the cycle
- Dirty level probe reading dry
- Fill valve or supply problem
- Drain valve left open
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind PGM LED 7 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A probe whose tip is crusted with scale so it does not conduct to the water
- A float switch that has stuck low in its guide after an overnight shutdown
Safe checks before calling for service
- Count seven flashes with the pause between groups.
- Check that the tank has water and the drain valve is closed.
- Clean the low-water probe and the float switch, as the maker's daily cleaning calls for.
- If the tank is full and the probe is clean but seven flashes return, call us.
- Tell us whether the machine fills when you ask it to.
How a technician diagnoses PGM LED 7 flashes
- Confirm seven flashes and look at the actual tank level.
- Check the drain valve seal and run a fill to see whether the tank takes water.
- Test the fill valve and supply pressure if the tank will not fill.
- Clean the probe and check the board sees it as wet at normal level.
- Check the wiring from the probe and float switch to the board.
- Replace the part that tests bad and start a full cycle.
- Probe and valve wiring carry live voltage inside the machine.
- A full tank with the same pattern means the sensing is wrong, which needs a meter test at the board.
- Running the heater with no water burns out the elements.
How PGM LED 7 flashes differs from similar codes
Pad-type Douglas machines show Er05 for the same low-water condition.

Is seven flashes the same as one flash?
No. One flash is a fill that timed out; seven is a cycle requested without water at the probe.
The tank is full. Why seven flashes?
The probe may be dirty and reading dry, so clean it first.
Can I start the heater anyway?
No. A heater without water over it can burn out.
