Vitamix Commercial Blender Error Code THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE

THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE on the Vitamix The Quiet One, model VM0145, means the machine can no longer read its motor temperature sensor. The owner's manual says to call Vitamix technical support. Turn the machine off, unplug it, try once more, and stop using it if the message returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the machine loses its motor overheat protection and may not start.

What does Vitamix THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE mean?

The motor temperature sensor is what lets the control protect the motor from overheating. During operation, the control reads the sensor and uses the value to decide whether the motor can keep running. If that reading is lost or out of range, the control cannot tell how hot the motor is. Instead of running without protection, it shows THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE and the blender may not start. This is a different problem from an overheated motor, which shows HOT SHUTDOWN. Here the sensor, its wiring or the input on the control board is the suspect. Because the safety function depends on the sensor, the manual sends the owner to technical support. A single restart can show whether the reading was momentary, but continued use with a bad sensor risks damaging the motor.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Vitamix The Quiet One, model VM0145 with display, per the VM50031 instruction manual troubleshooting section.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE on the display
  • Blender refusing to start
  • Message returning right after power-up
  • No other warning before it appeared

Possible causes

Listed in Vitamix's documentation

  • The thermal sensor and its connector
  • The wire run linking the sensor to the control
  • The sensor input on the control board
  • Motor condition, if the sensor reads normally on test

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Sensor connector loosened by years of vibration from heavy use
  • Heat damage to the sensor lead after repeated overheating
  • Moisture from a cleaning spray reaching the base

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the machine off and unplug it.
  2. Make sure the container is removed and set aside on a stable surface.
  3. Plug in and try once more.
  4. If THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE returns, stop using the blender and contact service.
  5. Note whether the machine ran hot or got wet before the message.

How a technician diagnoses THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE

  1. Read the message and ask about earlier overheating.
  2. Disconnect power and inspect the sensor connector and lead.
  3. Measure the sensor resistance and compare with its temperature.
  4. Check continuity of the wiring to the control board.
  5. Test the board input with a known-good sensor.
  6. Replace the sensor first, then the board only if the problem remains.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The sensor sits near the motor inside the base on mains voltage.
  • Without a working sensor the motor has no overheat protection, so running tests with the machine live is risky.
  • Sensor and board checks require a meter and reference values for this model.

THERMAL SENSOR FAILUREQuestions about Vitamix THERMAL SENSOR FAILURE
Can I keep blending with this message?

No. The sensor protects the motor, so stop using the machine until it is serviced.

Is it the same as HOT SHUTDOWN?

No. HOT SHUTDOWN means the motor got hot. This means the sensor cannot be read.

Will a restart fix it?

It may if the reading was momentary, but if the message returns, the sensor circuit needs service.
