FETCO Coffee Brewer Error Code 201: Heater, High Limit or SSR
Code 201 on a FETCO XTS brewer means the heater is open, the high limit thermostat has tripped, or the solid state relay has failed. The manual says to check and replace the heating elements if necessary. The code does not clear by power cycling; reset it in the menu.
High: the brewer cannot heat reliably and a tripped limit points to an overheating risk.

What does FETCO error code 201 mean?
A brewer's heating circuit has three parts that can stop it: the heating element, the high limit thermostat that opens when the tank gets too hot, and the solid state relay, or SSR, that switches the element on and off. Code 201 is posted when the control sees a heating problem that fits one of these. The manual lists the cause as a failure of the heating element, SSR, high limit, or low voltage, and the action is to check and replace the heating elements if necessary. Because the control cannot tell which of these has failed from the display alone, the code says where to look but not what to replace. Low supply voltage is included because a weak supply can make heating look failed. The stored error survives any power cycle and stays until it is reset in the menu. When the cause has been repaired, go to PROGRAMMING, OTHER, ERROR CODES, Display Errors, and Reset Errors. Since the heater circuit carries line voltage, testing it is for a technician.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the FETCO CBS-2151XTS, CBS-2152XTS and CBS-2152-2XTS brewers, from the User's Guide for those models. The CBS-2131 and CBS-2132 XTS family has a different guide.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- 201 appears in the error list
- The tank does not heat, or heats slowly
- Brewed coffee is cooler than normal
- The brewer stops heating after a trip
Possible causes
Listed in FETCO's documentation
- Failure of heating element, SSR, high limit, or low voltage
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 201 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Scale on the element has caused it to overheat and trip the high limit
- The SSR has failed open and no longer switches power to the heater
- Supply voltage at the wall is low, so the heater cannot reach temperature
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the brewer off and let it cool.
- Check whether other equipment on the same circuit tripped a breaker, and whether the brewer's breaker is on.
- Do not try to clear 201 with the power switch; the manual says that does not work.
- Tell the technician the code is 201, how long the brewer takes to heat now, and the date of the last descaling.
How a technician diagnoses error code 201
- Read the error list and confirm 201.
- Measure supply voltage at the brewer terminals under load.
- Check the high limit thermostat for continuity and the heating element for resistance.
- Test the SSR input and output during a call for heat.
- Replace the failed element, limit or SSR, then reset errors and confirm normal heat-up.
- The heater circuit carries line voltage
- A tripped limit may point to scale or a level problem that must be solved first
- One code covers three different parts, so testing decides which
How error code 201 differs from similar codes
201 is a heating-circuit code listing element, SSR, high limit or low voltage; 050 and 051 concern the temperature probe instead.

Which part failed when I see 201?
The code cannot tell. The manual lists the heating element, SSR, high limit or low voltage, so testing decides.
Can low voltage cause 201?
Yes, the manual lists it. That is why a technician checks supply voltage under load before replacing parts.
Can I reset and keep brewing?
The reset only clears the record. If the heater is not working, the error comes back and the water will not reach temperature.
