Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code EFL: Email Failure Alarm

EFL, Email Failure Alarm, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means the controller could not get an email alert confirmed after seven attempts in a row. The manual lists the trigger only. Cooling is not what this alarm reports, so check the network and email settings.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: the cooling can run normally, but alert emails may not be reaching you.

What does Bally error code EFL mean?

SmartVap+ can send alert emails when something goes wrong, through the network connection it is given. After sending, it waits for the email server to confirm. If the server does not confirm after seven consecutive attempts, the controller raises the Email Failure Alarm and shows EFL. The manual's Alarm Status Menu lists the alarm and that trigger only and gives no repair steps. This alarm describes the alert path, not the walk-in: the evaporator may be cooling perfectly well while EFL is active. The risk is that other alarms, such as a high room temperature, are not reaching the people who should know about them, so an EFL is worth treating as a warning about monitoring. The manual does not name the causes, but any break between the controller and the mail server could produce it.

What you may notice

  • EFL shows in the active alarm list
  • Alert emails stop arriving at the usual address
  • The walk-in itself is cooling normally

Possible causes

Listed in Bally's documentation

  • Email alert not confirmed by the email server after seven consecutive attempts

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code EFL on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Network cable or switch port feeding the controller unplugged or down
  • Internet or local network outage at the site
  • Email server settings or login changed since the controller was set up
  • Mail server refusing the controller's messages

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check whether the site's internet and other network devices are working.
  2. Look at the network cable at the controller, without opening panels, for a plugged-in connector with link lights.
  3. Ask whoever manages the email account whether its settings or password changed.
  4. Check the room temperature by hand and note the time EFL began for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code EFL

  1. Read active alarms and confirm the controller has a network address and link.
  2. Check the cable, switch and router for the controller's connection.
  3. Verify the email server address, port and login stored on the controller.
  4. Send a test alert and watch whether the server confirms.
  5. Correct the settings or the network problem, clear the alarm and confirm alerts arrive.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Network and email settings on the controller must match the site's mail server and security rules.
  • Reaching the controller's network port can mean opening the evaporator housing next to energized wiring.

How error code EFL differs from similar codes

EFL concerns email alerts only. CoA and PrF are communication alarms between controllers or the display, not to a mail server.

EFLQuestions about Bally error code EFL

The cooling may be fine, but alerts for other problems may not reach you. Check the room temperature yourself.

Why seven attempts?

Is EFL the same as CoA?

No. CoA is a loss of contact between bonded controllers. EFL is about a mail server not confirming.
