Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code HSH: High Superheat Alarm
HSH, High Superheat Alarm, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means superheat is above the upper limit. The manual lists the trigger and no repair steps. Check room temperature and call a technician.
Medium: the coil is not being fed as expected, which can reduce cooling, and the light shows whether the system is running.

What does Bally error code HSH mean?
Superheat is how many degrees the refrigerant leaving the evaporator has warmed above its boiling point at the measured suction pressure. SmartVap+ works it out from its suction pressure and suction temperature sensors and holds it between an upper and a lower limit. High superheat means the coil is getting less refrigerant than it can use, so the end of the coil runs dry and cooling suffers. When the calculated value rises above the upper limit, the controller raises the High Superheat Alarm and shows HSH. The manual's Alarm Status Menu gives only the trigger, superheat above the upper limit, and offers no causes or steps. The matching alarm for the opposite condition is LSH. If the sensors themselves fail, the controller shows SSA or PSA instead of a superheat alarm.
Affected models and control systems
The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, used with Bally walk-in evaporators. The manual is Bulletin B30-SVP-OM-2.05, for firmware 2.05 and later.

What you may notice
- HSH appears in the active alarm list
- Room temperature climbs slowly above the setpoint
- Frost covers only the first part of the coil
Possible causes
Listed in Bally's documentation
- Superheat above the upper limit
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code HSH on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Refrigerant feed restricted by a clogged filter drier or a stuck-closed metering valve
- Low refrigerant charge from a slow leak in the system
- Evaporator getting less liquid because of a high-pressure or condenser problem
- Suction pressure or temperature sensor reading wrongly
Safe checks before calling for service
- Scroll active alarms and note the light color. Look for PSA or SSA too, which would point to a sensor.
- Check the room temperature and product and watch whether it is rising.
- Look at the coil without opening panels: frost on only part of it is worth noting.
- Try Clear Alarms once and see if HSH returns, and tell the technician what room temperature and light color you saw.
How a technician diagnoses error code HSH
- Read active alarms and compare current superheat with the controller's limits.
- Verify both suction sensors against gauges and a clamp thermometer.
- Check the metering valve, filter drier and liquid line for restriction or a temperature drop.
- Check refrigerant charge and condenser performance.
- Correct the confirmed cause, clear the alarm and watch superheat settle within its limits.
- Measuring superheat properly means gauges on the refrigerant circuit, which requires certification and equipment.
- Low charge, restrictions and valve problems need refrigerant recovery and repair that only a technician may do.
How error code HSH differs from similar codes
HSH is high superheat and LSH is low superheat. Sensor alarms like SSA and PSA can cause misleading superheat readings.

Does HSH mean the refrigerant is low?
It is one possibility. High superheat also happens with a restricted feed or a wrong sensor reading, so a technician has to measure.
Should I clear the alarm?
The manual says Clear Alarms clears active alarms. If HSH comes back, the condition is still present.
Is HSH the same as HtA?
No. HtA is high room temperature, while HSH is about the refrigerant leaving the coil.
