Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code LtA: Low Temperature Alarm

LtA, Low Temperature Alarm (LOW AIR TEMP), on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means room temperature has stayed too low for longer than the alarm delay, which defaults to 10 minutes. Check for frozen product and call a technician if the room keeps dropping.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: an over-cold room can freeze product, but the walk-in is still cooling.

What does Bally error code LtA mean?

SmartVap+ sets a low limit equal to ROOM TEMP minus the LOW TEMP ALARM OFFSET, which defaults to 4 F. If the room temperature stays below that limit for longer than the LOW TEMP ALARM DELAY, which defaults to 10 minutes, the controller raises the Low Temperature Alarm and shows LtA, labeled LOW AIR TEMP. The delay is short compared with the high-temperature alarm because a walk-in that runs too cold can freeze product, damage produce and burden the unit. The manual lists the trigger and gives no repair steps and does not say what the controller does with cooling while it is active. The alarm is about the room, so the reason can be a controller reading that is too low, a room setpoint that was changed, or cooling that did not stop when it should have.

Affected models and control systems

The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, on Bally walk-in evaporators. The default 4 F offset and 10-minute delay come from the manual and can be changed in the settings.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • LtA or LOW AIR TEMP appears in the active alarm list
  • Produce or drinks near the evaporator are freezing
  • The room feels much colder than the setpoint

Possible causes

Listed in Bally's documentation

  • Room temperature below ROOM TEMP - LOW TEMP ALARM OFFSET (default 4 F) for longer than the LOW TEMP ALARM DELAY

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code LtA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Return air sensor reading colder than the room, so the controller keeps cooling
  • Room setpoint recently lowered or reset
  • Refrigerant feed or cooling not shutting off as it should
  • Product placed right in front of the evaporator discharge

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check the room temperature with a separate thermometer and move frost-sensitive product away from the evaporator.
  2. Scroll active alarms and look for ASA or other sensor alarms.
  3. Ask whether anyone changed the setpoint recently.
  4. Note the room temperature, the light color and how long the room has been cold for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code LtA

  1. Read active alarms and history, then compare the controller's air reading with a reference thermometer.
  2. Check the setpoint, offset and delay settings against what the site expects.
  3. Test the return air sensor against its curve at the real air temperature.
  4. Check the cooling control output and the refrigerant feed for failure to stop.
  5. Correct the cause, clear alarms and confirm the room holds at setpoint.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The settings that set the limit also run the cooling control and should be changed only by someone who knows the load.
  • Cooling that does not stop may involve contactors or valves at line voltage.

How error code LtA differs from similar codes

LtA is low room temperature and HtA is high room temperature. A bad air sensor can produce either, along with ASA.

LtAQuestions about Bally error code LtA
Why is LtA a 10-minute delay?

That is the manual's default low-temperature delay. It is shorter than the 60-minute high-temperature default, and the setting may have been changed.

Can LtA be caused by a sensor?

Yes, a return air sensor reading colder than the room can make the controller over-cool. A technician checks that against a thermometer.

Does LtA damage the unit?

The manual does not say. Over-cooling can freeze product and load the unit, so it is worth checking.
