Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code SCC: Short Compressor Cycle
SCC, Short Compressor Cycle, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means the compressor has been started too often to hold suction pressure. The manual lists the trigger only. Check room temperature and call a technician.
Medium: the compressor is starting too often, which wears it and may mean a refrigerant or valve problem.

What does Bally error code SCC mean?
A compressor should run for a reasonable stretch each time it starts. Starting it again and again in quick succession wears the motor, the contactor and the start parts, and usually shows that something is wrong with how pressure is being held. SmartVap+ counts compressor starts that are made to keep suction pressure under control. When the compressor has been started an excessive number of times, the controller raises the Short Compressor Cycle alarm and shows SCC. The manual's Alarm Status Menu gives that trigger and no steps, and it does not give the number of starts that counts as excessive. Short cycling can come from refrigerant feed that is on and off too quickly, a pressure reading that jumps, or a liquid valve that leaks so the low side keeps rising after the compressor stops.

What you may notice
- SCC appears in the active alarm list
- The compressor outdoors or in the machine room starts and stops again and again
- Room temperature swings or rises despite the compressor running
Possible causes
Listed in Bally's documentation
- Compressor started an excessive number of times to maintain suction pressure
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code SCC on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Liquid line valve leaking, letting suction pressure climb after each stop
- Suction pressure sensor reading unsteady, so the controller keeps calling for starts
- Low pressure cutout setting too close to the running pressure
- Low refrigerant charge letting pressure drop and recover rapidly
Safe checks before calling for service
- Listen or look at the condensing unit without opening it: does it start and stop every few minutes?
- Check the room temperature and whether it is staying near setpoint.
- Scroll active alarms and look for PSA or LPA, which may be related.
- Note how often the compressor starts and for how long it runs, and tell the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code SCC
- Read active alarms and compare the controller's suction pressure with gauges across a few cycles.
- Time the compressor cycles and look for the pattern.
- Check the liquid line valve for leak-through and the pressure sensor for steady readings.
- Check refrigerant charge and the low pressure settings.
- Correct the cause, clear the alarm and confirm cycles are back to a normal length.
- Gauges on the refrigerant circuit and certified handling are needed to judge charge and valve leakage.
- Repeated starts stress the compressor, and the contactor and motor are wired at line voltage.
How error code SCC differs from similar codes
SCC is about starts. Pdt is a single pumpdown that took too long, and LPA is about suction pressure dropping too often.

Is short cycling bad for the compressor?
It adds wear because each start is the hardest moment for the motor. We would have it checked sooner rather than later.
How many starts trigger SCC?
The manual says an excessive number and does not give the figure.
Can I stop it by raising the setpoint?
We would not. Changing the setpoint hides the cause and can warm the room.
