Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code SSA: Suction Sensor Alarm

SSA, Suction Sensor Alarm, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means the suction temperature sensor is shorted or open. The manual lists the alarm and its trigger only. Note the light color and room temperature, then call a technician.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the controller has lost its suction temperature reading, and the light shows whether the system is running.

What does Bally error code SSA mean?

Alongside suction pressure, the SmartVap+ controller reads the temperature of the refrigerant leaving the evaporator. That temperature is one of the two numbers it needs to work out how much superheat the coil is delivering. The sensor's signal is checked continuously. If the controller sees a shorted or open circuit, it can no longer trust the suction temperature, so it raises the Suction Sensor Alarm and displays SSA. The manual's Alarm Status Menu gives only this trigger, with no repair steps and no description of what the controller does while the alarm is active. Active alarms are scrolled on the on-board display with the arrow keys, a red light is a critical alarm with the system not running, and a yellow light is a non-critical alarm with the system running. The manual does not say which color goes with SSA.

Affected models and control systems

The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, on Bally walk-in evaporators. The manual is Bulletin B30-SVP-OM-2.05, for firmware 2.05 and later.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • SSA appears in the active alarm list
  • The alarm light shows red or yellow
  • Frost patterns on the coil look uneven or the coil ices more than usual

Possible causes

Listed in Bally's documentation

  • Suction temperature sensor shorted or open

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code SSA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Sensor lead loose or broken where it leaves the suction line clamp
  • Sensor no longer in contact with the suction line because a clamp or insulation has come off
  • Ice or water damaging the sensor connector

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Scroll the active alarms with the arrow keys and note whether the light is red or yellow.
  2. Look at the walk-in's room temperature and whether the evaporator fan and coil seem to be working normally.
  3. Leave the evaporator housing closed and do not pull on sensor leads.
  4. If you try Clear Alarms (CLA, press and hold) and SSA returns, note that for the service call.

How a technician diagnoses error code SSA

  1. Read active alarms and history and note the light color.
  2. Check the sensor lead and its connector at the controller for damage, ice or corrosion.
  3. Measure sensor resistance at the controller and compare it with the sensor's curve at the suction line temperature.
  4. Check the sensor's clamp and insulation for contact with the line.
  5. Replace the sensor only if it fails the resistance check, then clear alarms and watch superheat settle.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Measuring the sensor involves energized controller wiring inside the evaporator housing.
  • Judging suction temperature against the refrigerant circuit's real condition calls for gauges on the refrigerant side.

How error code SSA differs from similar codes

SSA is the suction temperature sensor alarm. The pressure sensor has its own alarm, PSA, and the return air sensor has ASA.

SSAQuestions about Bally error code SSA
Is SSA the same as PSA?

No. SSA is the suction temperature sensor. PSA is the suction pressure sensor. Both feed the controller's refrigerant control.

Can I keep using the walk-in?

The manual does not say. The light tells you: yellow means the system is running, red means it is not. Watch the room temperature either way.

What clears it?

The manual says Clear Alarms clears all active alarms. If the sensor circuit is still shorted or open, SSA will come back.
