Blakeslee Commercial Dishwasher Error Code E2: Tank Probe Fail

E2 TANK PROBE FAIL means the temperature probe of the wash tank has failed. The manual says to contact Technical Service. A service technician has to test the probe and its wiring before the machine is used again.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the control cannot regulate the wash tank temperature, so the machine should not run.

What does Blakeslee error code E2 mean?

The wash tank temperature is held in a working range so detergent can do its job. A probe in the tank reports the water temperature, and the control switches the tank heater on and off accordingly. If the probe signal is missing or outside any believable range, the control cannot regulate the heater and displays E2 TANK PROBE FAIL. The manual's entry is wash tank temperature probe failure, with Contact Technical Service as the action. The probe is the sensor, not the heater, which differs from E3, where the tank is not heating. Think of E2 as the control saying it has lost sight of the tank temperature. It is not safe to let the heater run on a guess, so the machine will not carry on normally. This is a different probe from the rinse boiler probe covered by B2.

Affected models and control systems

Blakeslee D-18D / D-18V digital-control hood-type dishwasher. The manual's cover prints D-19 L and D-19 LRS and names no D-18 model, so the alarm list is read as covering this hood-type family.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • E2 TANK PROBE FAIL on the display
  • Wash water does not reach normal temperature
  • Wash cycle stops or will not start
  • Alarm returns after restart

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Wash tank probe open or shorted
  • Probe lead damaged where it leaves the tank
  • Probe connector corroded by steam and detergent
  • Probe input on the control board not reading the sensor

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Turn the machine off and on once to see whether E2 is still active.
  2. Do not run cycles if it returns; the control cannot see the tank temperature.
  3. Keep the area around the tank dry.
  4. Do not reach into the tank or touch the probe while the water is hot.
  5. Note the display text and any other alarm shown, and tell the technician.

How a technician diagnoses error code E2

  1. Read the alarm record and confirm E2 is active.
  2. Measure the tank probe resistance at its connector with power locked out and compare with the tank's water temperature.
  3. Inspect the lead and connector for damage, moisture and corrosion.
  4. Substitute a known resistance at the board input to separate a failed probe from a failed board input.
  5. Replace the probe, lead or board and verify the tank holds its temperature.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The probe sits in a tank of hot, chemically treated water.
  • The connectors and board are reached through panels near line-voltage wiring.
  • Separating a probe failure from a board input failure takes a meter and a reference resistance.

How error code E2 differs from similar codes

E2 is the wash tank probe. B2 is the same kind of failure on the rinse boiler probe.

E2Questions about Blakeslee error code E2
Is the heater broken when E2 shows?

Not necessarily. E2 names the probe. If the heater had failed, you would see the tank heating alarm E3 instead.

Can I run it by watching the water myself?

Do not. The machine relies on the probe to control the heater and washing results depend on it.

Does cleaning the tank help?

Cleaning does not repair a failed probe. A technician has to test it.
