Continental Girbau Inteli Washer Error Code 6: Motor Overheating
Code 6 means the motor klixons, the thermal protectors in the drum motor, are open. They close again by themselves once the motor cools. Let the washer rest, restart with a lighter load, and call a technician if it comes back.
Medium: the thermal protection did its job and the washer can run again after cooling, but the cause remains.

What does Continental Girbau error code 6 mean?
A klixon is a small thermal switch built into the drum motor. When the winding gets too hot, the switch opens to protect the motor, and it closes again after the motor cools down. The Inteli control watches those switches. While they are open, it will not drive the motor and displays 6 (Motor overheating). Cooling is the first remedy, but the alarm returning means something is making the motor work harder than it should. The manual's checks go through the usual suspects: restriction in the basket, the drain valve, the cleanliness of the inverter and its fan, the dip switches, the motor bearings, the motor windings and the amp draw. The sheet lists no individual failed parts for this code. Because it is a thermal alarm, how long the washer ran before it appeared and how heavy the loads were are useful clues for the technician. A klixon that opens early on a cool motor points toward the motor or its wiring rather than the load.
Affected models and control systems
Continental Girbau E-Series washer-extractors with Inteli control, sheet names RMG055 and smaller and EH060 and larger. Washers with Logi, LogiPro or Vended control use ALn alarms instead.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Code 6 on the display
- Motor housing too hot to hold a hand on
- Washer restarts after cooling and stops again
Possible causes
Likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 6 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Drive belt too tight and loading the motor
- Lint packed around the motor housing blocking cooling
- Heavy loads run back to back with no rest
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press stop, let the drum come to rest and leave the washer off for at least 30 minutes.
- Clear lint and clutter from around the machine without opening panels.
- Restart with a smaller load and see whether code 6 returns.
- If it returns, note the load size and the number of cycles run before it appeared.
How a technician diagnoses error code 6
- Read the code and confirm the klixons are open when it shows.
- Check the basket for restriction and the drain valve for blockage.
- Inspect the inverter for lint and test its fan, then check the dip switches.
- Check the motor bearings with the belt off.
- Measure the motor windings and amp draw.
- Winding and amp-draw tests run on energized motor circuits.
- Removing the belt to test bearings means working around guarded moving parts.
- A motor that keeps overheating can burn out its windings, which makes the repair far larger.
How error code 6 differs from similar codes
Code 6 is the motor thermal alarm. Codes 8 and 39 are inverter heat and overload alarms, and code 40 is an inverter overload.

Will the klixons reset themselves?
Yes, the manual says they close again once the motor cools.
How long should I wait?
About half an hour is a sensible cooling rest.
Does code 6 mean a new motor?
Not usually. Binding in the basket, a tight belt, or a clogged drain more often cause the overheating.
