Continental Girbau Washer Error Code ALn / V-13: Inverter Too Hot

ALn / V-13 means the inverter temperature went above its working range. Switch the washer off, let it cool and clear any lint from the area around it. If V-13 returns, a technician should check the inverter, its fan and its cover.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the inverter has shut the drive down and the washer is out of service until it cools and is fixed.

What does Continental Girbau error code ALn / V-13 mean?

V-13 is one of the alarms the E-Series control uses for an inverter that is running too hot. The drive that spins the drum gives off heat, and it relies on a finned heatsink, a fan and a cover that guides the air. When the inverter's temperature sensor reports a reading above the allowed range, the inverter stops and the control shows ALn / V-13. The ST-101 sheet lists V-13 together with VAR 6, VAR 7 and U-55 as a single high-temperature group. For V-13 the manual keeps its advice short and practical: clean the inverter, verify the fan and fan motor, make sure the inverter cover is installed, and check the drain and basket movement, since a restricted drain or a stiff basket makes the motor pull more current and adds heat. The causes it names are a dirty inverter and a failed fan. The alarm is a protective shutdown, so it normally clears once the inverter cools, but it will return if the cause is still there.

What you may notice

  • ALn / V-13 on the display
  • Cycle stops after a long run or a heavy load
  • No sound of the inverter fan, or a fan running slowly

Possible causes

Listed in Continental Girbau's documentation

  • Dirty inverter
  • Failed fan

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code ALn / V-13 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Fan blades clogged with lint so they cannot reach full speed
  • Cover removed during an earlier repair and never refitted
  • Back-to-back heavy loads without any rest period

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press stop and switch the washer off at its disconnect.
  2. Wait at least 30 minutes for the inverter to cool before restarting.
  3. Clear lint and dust from around the machine without removing any panels, and keep the space ventilated.
  4. If V-13 returns, tell the technician how long the washer ran and whether the room was warm.

How a technician diagnoses error code ALn / V-13

  1. Confirm the alarm and how long the washer had been running.
  2. Clean the heatsink and fins of the inverter.
  3. Test the fan and fan motor and check the supply to the fan.
  4. Make sure the inverter cover is fitted so air flows over the heatsink.
  5. Check the drain and basket movement for added load, then replace the inverter only if cooling is normal.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The inverter and fan are behind panels on energized circuits with stored charge.
  • Fan supply voltage can only be checked with a meter on the live wiring.
  • Cleaning fins incorrectly can bend them or push lint into the electronics.

How error code ALn / V-13 differs from similar codes

V-13 is the same high-temperature alarm as VAR 6, VAR 7 and U-55, only reported under a different number.

ALn / V-13Questions about Continental Girbau error code ALn / V-13
Does V-13 mean the inverter is damaged?

Not necessarily. Heat from lint or a dead fan is the usual story, and the inverter often recovers once it is cleaned and cooled.

Can I just wait and restart?

One restart after cooling is fine. If the alarm comes back, the cause is still there.

Is V-13 the same as V-11 to V-14?

No. V-13 is a heat alarm only. V-11 and V-14 are about unbalanced current.
