Hobart Legacy+ Mixer Error Er1: Memory Error After Power Flicker

Er1 is a memory error on Hobart Legacy+ HL800 and HL1400 mixers: the motor drive was storing data when power flickered or dropped, so the stored data may be wrong. The mixer will not run while it shows. Cycle power until the display goes out, check that the plug or disconnect is seated, and call us if Er1 returns.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the mixer will not run while the code is shown, though a single occurrence usually clears with a power cycle.

What does Hobart error code Er1 mean?

The motor drive keeps operating data in memory and writes to it as the mixer runs. If supply power flickers or drops out in the middle of a write, the stored data can be incomplete, and at the next check the drive reports Er1 on the SmartTimer display. The mixer will not run while the code is shown. It is one of the milder codes in the Hobart list, and a power cycle is the first thing to try: wait until the display goes out, then reconnect power. A single Er1 after a storm or an outage is common and usually harmless. If it returns often, the supply to the mixer deserves a closer look, since a loose plug, disconnect or breaker can produce the same flicker night after night. Only when the code repeats without any power event does the drive memory itself come under suspicion. The display cannot tell whether stored settings were changed, so a batch should be checked after the code clears. The display text is Er1.

What you may notice

  • Er1 on the SmartTimer display
  • Mixer will not start while the code is shown
  • Code appearing after a storm, outage or breaker trip

Possible causes

Listed in Hobart's documentation

  • Power interruptions or flicker on the mixer circuit
  • Loose plug, disconnect or breaker
  • Drive memory, if the code repeats without a power event

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Er1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A neighboring machine with a large motor that causes a dip on a shared circuit when it starts
  • A plug whose blades have lost their grip after years of washing down the area

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Cycle power to the mixer: wait until the display goes out, then reconnect power.
  2. Check that the plug or disconnect is seated firmly.
  3. Start the mixer on a normal batch and see if the code stays away.
  4. Should Er1 reappear, call us to schedule a visit.
  5. Tell us whether lights flickered or the breaker moved around the time it appeared.

How a technician diagnoses error code Er1

  1. Read the code and ask about recent outages, storms or breaker trips.
  2. Check plug, receptacle or disconnect and breaker for heat marks and looseness.
  3. Measure supply voltage at the mixer during start-up.
  4. Monitor the supply for dips while the mixer runs a batch.
  5. Compare drive settings and timer values with the mixer's known setup.
  6. Replace the drive only if Er1 returns with a stable, tested supply.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Supply and drive checks are made at the disconnect and drive input on 208 to 240 V circuits, where only a qualified person should work.
  • A repeat Er1 can point to the drive, which holds line voltage and capacitors even after switch-off.
  • The display cannot tell us whether stored settings changed, so we verify the mixer's setup after any repair.
