Hobart Legacy+ Mixer Error OC1 / OC2 / OC3: Over Current
OC1, OC2 and OC3 are over current codes from the motor drive on Hobart Legacy+ HL800 and HL1400 mixers: the drive shut the motor off because it saw too much current. Stop the mixer, think about what was in the bowl, then cycle power and try a smaller batch at a lower speed. If OC returns with a light load, stop using the mixer and call us.
High: the drive has cut the motor to protect itself, and repeated overcurrent can damage the drive or motor.
What does Hobart error code OC1 / OC2 / OC3 mean?
The motor drive measures the current going to the motor and cuts power when it passes a safe limit, protecting both the motor and itself. The SmartTimer shows the code as an ER number and the mixer will not run until power is cycled and the cause is corrected. The manual's four areas are the supply voltage at the mixer while it is loaded, the size and stiffness of the batch in the bowl, the motor leads and drive terminals for a short or a ground, and whether a power interruption came just before the code. A stiff dough at the wrong speed or a full bowl can pull too much current without anything being broken. Low supply voltage makes the motor draw more current to do the same work. A wiring problem at the drive terminals is the most serious cause. The code does not say whether the current was high because of the load, the supply or the wiring. Clearing it by cycling power without finding the cause can stress the drive again. The display text is OC1 / OC2 / OC3.
Affected models and control systems
Hobart Legacy+ HL800 and HL1400 mixers with the motor drive and SmartTimer display. The three numbers share one meaning.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- OC1, OC2 or OC3 on the SmartTimer display
- Mixer stops partway through a stiff or large batch
- Mixer will not run until power is cycled
Possible causes
Listed in Hobart's documentation
- Low supply voltage at the mixer while loaded
- Batch too large or too stiff for the speed
- Short or ground at the motor leads or drive terminals
- Power interruption just before the code
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code OC1 / OC2 / OC3 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A bowl or beater that drags because a worn bearing or bent agitator adds friction
- Dough that was too cold and stiff for the speed chosen
Safe checks before calling for service
- Stop the mixer and leave the bowl guard closed.
- Think about what was in the bowl: a stiff dough at the wrong speed or a full bowl can pull too much current.
- Cycle power to the mixer, and try a smaller batch at a lower speed.
- If OC comes back with a light load, stop using the mixer and call us.
- Tell us the batch size, the speed and the product when the code appeared.
How a technician diagnoses error code OC1 / OC2 / OC3
- Read the code and ask what batch and speed were running.
- Measure supply voltage at the disconnect while the mixer runs under load.
- Spin the bowl and agitator by hand with power off to check for drag.
- Inspect motor leads and drive terminals for damage, a short or a ground.
- Insulation-test the motor winding with the leads disconnected.
- Replace the drive or motor only after the load, supply and wiring are cleared.
- Checking leads and terminals for a short or ground involves 208 to 240 V circuits and drive capacitors that hold charge.
- The code does not say whether load, supply or wiring caused the high current, so each is measured.
- We measure supply voltage under load and inspect the motor circuit before we price a repair.

Related Hobart mixer error codes
Is OC always a heavy batch?
No. A heavy batch is the usual cause, but low voltage or a wiring problem can do it too.
Does OC1 differ from OC3?
The manual groups them with one meaning, over current.
Can I keep cycling power?
Once, with a lighter batch. Repeats on light loads mean stop.
