Message 311 on a Meiko M-iClean U reports a lack of detergent. Check that the suction lance sits properly in the canister, clean it if it is dirty, and refill the canister if it is empty. If the message stays after that, call us.

What does MEIKO error code 311 mean?
Detergent is dosed into the wash tank by a chemical pump that pulls product through a suction lance dipped into the canister. The control of the M-iClean U watches that supply, and when no product is being drawn it shows message 311, described in the manual as a lack of detergent. The canister may simply be empty, or the lance may be out of position or clogged so it cannot pull anything even though product remains. The machine is not locked out, but it is washing with plain water and heat. Soil stays on the dishes, and without the detergent's wetting action the tank can foam or scum. The maker's operator step is to check the position of the lance and clean it if necessary. That one check solves many cases, because a lance resting against the side of the canister or coated in dried product draws air instead of liquid. When both the position and the level are right and 311 persists, the issue is with the pump or the sensing.
Affected models and control systems
This is for the Meiko M-iClean U undercounter dishwasher, from the red and gray messages in its operating instructions. Other Meiko ranges number their messages differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Message 311 on the display
- Food soil left on plates and glasses after the cycle
- Foam or a film of scum on the wash tank
- Canister at the machine empty or nearly so
Possible causes
Listed in MEIKO's documentation
- Detergent canister empty
- Suction lance out of position or clogged
- Dosing pump that has lost its prime
- Level sensing that reads empty by mistake
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 311 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Dried detergent crystals plugging the end of the lance
- Lance pushed back into its holder after a canister change so it sits above the liquid
- Chemical pump tubing worn or kinked so it pulls air
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the position of the suction lance in the canister, as the maker says, and clean it if it is dirty.
- Refill the canister if it is empty. Wear the gloves and eye protection the chemical maker calls for.
- Do not mix products or add anything the owner's manual does not call for.
- Run a cycle and see whether 311 returns.
- If it stays, note whether the canister was full and call us. Never bypass the chemical pump.
How a technician diagnoses error code 311
- Confirm the message and the canister level.
- Inspect the lance, the foot valve and the tubing for crystallized product and air leaks.
- Prime the pump and watch for steady draw.
- Measure delivered detergent during a wash and compare it with the setting.
- Test the level sensing against a full canister.
- Replace the lance, tubing or pump only once the test points to it.
- Detergent is caustic, and the tubing and pump head cannot be opened without a risk of burns to skin and eyes.
- Verifying dosing means a measured test with the machine's own settings, not a visual check.
- A level sensor that misreads full as empty is wired into the control and needs a meter to test.
How error code 311 differs from similar codes
Message 301 is the same kind of warning for rinse aid, and 311 is only detergent.

What is the suction lance?
It is the tube that dips into the detergent canister and pulls product to the machine. It has to sit at the bottom of the canister and it can clog with dried product.
Can I wash without detergent in an emergency?
It is safer not to. Soil stays on the dishes and the tank can foam. Refill first.
The canister is full but 311 shows. What now?
The lance may be clogged or the pump may need priming. Call us instead of forcing it.
