Milnor Washer-Extractor Message BRAKE PRESS. FAULT: Low Air Pressure

BRAKE PRESS. FAULT on a Milnor E-P Plus brake model means the cylinder brake is engaged when it should be disengaged, caused by insufficient air pressure. Check that the plant compressed air supply is on and shows normal pressure. Restart the cycle once the air is back, and call us if the message returns.

Medium · inspection needed

High: the washer stops and cannot run until the air pressure is restored.

What does Milnor BRAKE PRESS. FAULT mean?

Some Milnor washer-extractors, the brake models such as the 36026X8J, hold the cylinder with a brake that is released by compressed air. With enough pressure, the brake lets go and the drum can turn. The E-P Plus control watches that pressure, and when the brake is still engaged at a time it should be released, it stops the washer and shows BRAKE PRESS. FAULT. The cause named in the manual is insufficient air pressure, which means the drum is held back because the brake does not have the air it needs to release. The air comes from the plant, so the first things to look at are outside the washer: the plant compressed air supply and its pressure, and the condition of the air line. Inside the machine, a brake release valve that does not open, or a pressure sensing device that reads low, would give the same result. Operators should not touch the brake or the air lines, since the brake is under pressure and the drum can be moved by it. Once the plant air is back, the cycle can be restarted.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Milnor washer-extractors with the E-P Plus control on the H_J, V_J, X_J and MWR_ models that have a cylinder brake, such as the 36026X8J. Models without a brake do not show it.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • BRAKE PRESS. FAULT on the display
  • Washer stopping with the drum held
  • Hissing at a loose air connection
  • Plant air gauge reading low

Possible causes

Listed in Milnor's documentation

  • Plant compressed air supply and pressure
  • Air line condition
  • Brake release valve
  • Brake pressure sensing

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind BRAKE PRESS. FAULT on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Plant compressor cycling off or tripped on a hot laundry room afternoon
  • Moisture in the air line freezing or blocking a fitting
  • Another machine drawing down the shared air supply

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the plant compressed air supply is on and shows normal pressure.
  2. Do not touch the brake or air lines.
  3. Restart the cycle once the air pressure is back.
  4. If the message returns, note the pressure shown and call us; the maker says to check the plant air supply.

How a technician diagnoses BRAKE PRESS. FAULT

  1. Read the message and confirm the washer is a brake model.
  2. Check plant air supply, pressure and any dryer or filter on the line.
  3. Inspect the air line and fittings for leaks.
  4. Test the brake release valve and its operation.
  5. Check the brake pressure sensing against a gauge.
  6. Replace the valve or sensor only after the test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The brake is held by compressed air, and opening an air line under pressure can whip free or release the brake.
  • The release valve is controlled from live wiring in the cabinet.
  • Checking the pressure sensing needs a gauge in the line.

How BRAKE PRESS. FAULT differs from similar codes

Other messages on the E-P Plus control name the door or level; this one is specific to brake models and compressed air.
