Milnor Washer-Extractor Message: Check Level Switch, Levels Still Made

CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE on a Milnor E-P Plus washer-extractor means the microprocessor still sees a level made before or during extract, or before fill. The water should be gone, but the controller thinks it is not. Look for water in the drum and a backed-up drain, and wait to see whether it clears by itself.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: the cycle waits on the level; clears if the drum drains, otherwise it stays stopped.

What does Milnor CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE mean?

The E-P Plus control on Milnor H_J, V_J, X_J and MWR_ washer-extractors uses a level switch to know how much water is in the drum. At certain points the level should be absent: before the fill step, and before or during extract, after the water has drained. CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE appears when the microprocessor still sees a level at those moments. The message clears by itself once the level is lost, which is why it often points to slow draining. There are two basic explanations. Either water really is left in the drum, because the drain is slow, blocked or backed up, or an inlet valve is leaking water in before the fill step. Or the water is gone and the level switch or its air tube is stuck in the made position, or the wiring on the switch circuit is shorted. Looking through the door glass tells you which. If water is standing in the drum, never force the door. If the drum is dry, the switch circuit is the suspect and a technician should test it.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to Milnor washer-extractors with the E-P Plus control on the H_J, V_J, X_J and MWR_ models, such as the 36021V5J. Other Milnor controls word level messages differently.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE on the display
  • Water standing in the drum when it should be empty
  • Extract not starting
  • Slow draining at the floor drain

Possible causes

Listed in Milnor's documentation

  • A drain that leaves water in the drum before or during extract
  • A level switch or tube that sticks in the made position
  • An inlet valve that leaks water in before the fill step
  • Wiring on the level switch circuit that is shorted

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Lint or a sock caught in the drain valve, so the drum empties slowly
  • Floor drain shared with other washers that backs up at peak load
  • Level air tube with a kink or trapped water that holds a false level

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Look through the door glass to see whether water really is standing in the drum.
  2. Check the floor drain for backup.
  3. Never force the door if water is inside.
  4. Wait to see whether the message clears by itself.
  5. Call us if it stays, and tell us whether the drum was wet or dry.

How a technician diagnoses CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE

  1. Read the message and note the point in the cycle.
  2. Check the drum, drain valve and floor drain.
  3. Check the inlet valves for leaking through when closed.
  4. Inspect the level switch air tube for kinks or water.
  5. Test the level switch input and wiring with a meter.
  6. Replace the switch or valve only after the test.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Level switch wiring and the control inputs are on live circuits inside the cabinet.
  • A drum full of water cannot be opened safely, and the door interlock must not be forced.
  • Telling a stuck switch from a slow drain needs an observed drain time and a meter test.

How CHECK LEVEL SWITCH - LEVELS STILL MADE differs from similar codes

Coin-operated MCR washers show a similar problem as E3, but this E-P Plus message also covers levels seen during extract.
