What does Montague error code E21 / E24 mean?

Induction electronics produce a lot of heat inside the cabinet, so the control reads temperature sensors on its internal board and on the heat sink that carries heat away from the power parts. E21 and E24 are reported when one of those sensor readings is in error. The manual shows them as a single chart entry with the display E21 or E24, or 8 short flashes on the indicator lamp. When the sensor cannot be trusted, the control stops the unit immediately rather than keep heating without knowing how hot the electronics are. The manual does not say why it prints two numbers for one entry, and it does not say which number points to the board and which to the heat sink. It also lists no cause beyond the sensor error itself and gives no action except to contact a service agency. That is a plain statement of what the maker publishes: nothing in the chart suggests a cooking-side cause such as the pan, the zone setting or a blocked vent.

What you may notice

  • The range stops working immediately
  • E21 or E24 on the display, or 8 short flashes
  • No heat from any zone until the control is serviced

Possible causes

Listed in Montague's documentation

  • Sensor error on the internal board or heat sink

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code E21 / E24 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A temperature sensor reading that has drifted out of range on the board
  • A heat sink sensor lead that has loosened from its connector
  • Heat built up inside the cabinet from a blocked back or underside air path

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Switch every zone off and leave the range alone for a few minutes.
  2. Look at the area around the range: nothing should block the vents or sit against the unit.
  3. Do not open any panel. The manual gives no operator reset for this code.
  4. Write down whether it showed E21 or E24, or the number of flashes, and what was cooking when it stopped.

How a technician diagnoses error code E21 / E24

  1. Confirm the exact code and flash count and record the model plate.
  2. With power isolated, inspect the board and heat sink sensor connections for a loose or heat-marked terminal.
  3. Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the unit's specification at room temperature.
  4. Check the cooling path: fan operation if fitted, and clear vents.
  5. Replace the sensor, lead or board that tests wrong, then run a long cook cycle to prove it holds.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The sensors are on the power board that handles line voltage, so this is live-voltage electronics work.
  • Reading the heat sink and board sensors correctly needs the maker's values and a meter, not a guess.
  • The manual directs this code to a service agency and offers no operator step.

How error code E21 / E24 differs from similar codes

E21/E24 is a sensor problem inside the unit. E10 on the same chart is an internal electronic failure, and E12 and E20 are heat warnings that allow reduced power.

E21 / E24Questions about Montague error code E21 / E24
Can I keep using the range with E24 showing?

No. The manual says the unit stops working immediately, so it will not cook until it is serviced.

Is E21 different from E24?

The manual prints them as one entry with the same meaning and gives no separate cause for each.

Will powering it off and on clear the code?

The manual gives no reset step, so do not count on it. If the code returns, a technician needs to look at the sensor.
