Polar King Walk-In Cooler Error Code FTP Alarm: No Server Link

The FTP communication alarm means the controller cannot talk to the FTP server named in its logging options. The manual says this applies to SiteView Manager only and gives no repair steps. Check the network link and the server address, then clear the alarm from the menu.

Medium · inspection needed

Low: the manual ties this alarm to data logging, not to cooling.

What does Polar King FTP communication alarm mean?

When SiteView Manager is in use, the controller can send its logged data to an FTP server chosen under Settings and Logging Options. The controller checks that connection when it needs to upload. If it cannot reach the server it has been told to use, it raises the alarm called FTP communication alarm. On a Combo Display the name appears in the Alarms menu. On a Basic Display only a red or yellow alarm light shows. The manual is careful to say this alarm belongs to SiteView Manager only, so a walk-in that does not use SiteView logging is not expected to show it. It also does not say whether the problem lies with the cable, the network, the server address or the server itself. It states the trigger and nothing more. The alarm affects data collection, not the refrigeration, as far as the manual describes.

Possible causes

Likely causes — what usually sits behind FTP communication alarm on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • No communication to the FTP server set in Settings/Logging Options (SiteView Manager only)
  • The FTP server is switched off, moved or has a new address
  • Network connection from the controller to the site network is down
  • Login details for the FTP account were changed after the controller was set up
  • Firewall or router change blocking FTP traffic from the controller

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Check that the network cable is seated at the controller and the switch, and that the link light is on.
  2. Ask whoever manages the logging server whether it is running and reachable from the site network.
  3. Look in the Alarms menu on a Combo Display to see whether the SNTP or email alarms are also listed, which would point to a wider network problem.
  4. Once the connection is back, use CLEAR ALARMS in the manual menu to clear the alarm.
  5. Note when the logs last arrived and any recent network or server changes.

How a technician diagnoses FTP communication alarm

  1. Read the logging options and record the FTP server address, folder and account saved in the controller.
  2. Confirm the controller has a working network address and can reach the server's network.
  3. Test the FTP account and server from another device on the same network.
  4. Correct the address or login in the logging options if they differ from the server's current ones.
  5. Trigger an upload, confirm it succeeds, and clear the alarm.
! Leave this to a technician
  • The logging options hold server and account details that need to be matched to the site's own network by someone who manages it.
  • Testing the controller's network port can mean opening the control enclosure, which has line-voltage wiring.

How FTP communication alarm differs from similar codes

It is easy to confuse with the SNTP Communication alarm. Both belong to SiteView Manager, but FTP concerns the logging server and SNTP concerns the time server.
