Rational Combi Oven Error Code Service 11: CDS Sensor Too Many Pulses

Service 11 on a SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency means the CDS sensor is sending too many pulses, which points to water moving where it should not or a leak in the water path. If water is running on the floor, shut the supply valve and wipe the floor. If Service 11 comes straight back after one restart, skip steam programs and call us.

Medium · inspection needed

What does Rational error code Service 11 mean?

The CDS sensor counts water as it moves along the path to the steam generator, and it reports the count to the control as pulses. The control knows how many pulses to expect for a normal fill. When the sensor sends far too many, the control reads that as water flowing where it should not, or a leak in the water path, and shows Service 11. The oven may stop steam cooking and cleaning while the message is active. The maker's list covers the level electrode and its wiring to the steam generator, water path hoses and fittings for small leaks, a water valve that passes water when it should be closed, and the CDS sensor itself. A valve that passes water when closed is a common pattern in a busy kitchen, because grit or scale can hold the valve seat slightly open. The pulse count also rises if the wiring picks up noise, so the electrode wiring is part of the list. Sorting out which one it is takes a look inside the cabinet.

Affected models and control systems

This applies to the Rational SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency family, per the Original operating instructions. Other Rational generations use different service numbers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Service 11 on the screen
  • Steam and cleaning programs stopped
  • Water on the floor near the oven
  • A faint sound of water running when the oven is idle

Possible causes

Listed in Rational's documentation

  • Level electrode or its wiring to the steam generator
  • Water path hoses and fittings leaking slightly
  • Water valve passing water when it should be closed
  • CDS sensor itself failing

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Service 11 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • Scale holding the water valve seat open a hair
  • Hose clamp loosened by oven vibration
  • Moisture in the sensor connector adding stray pulses

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. If water is running on the floor, shut the supply valve to the oven and wipe the floor so nobody slips.
  2. Allow the cabinet to cool, open the valve again and cycle the oven switch off and on once.
  3. When Service 11 comes straight back, skip steam programs and phone us.
  4. Leave the panels shut, because hot steam parts and wiring are behind them. Note whether any water appeared on the floor.

How a technician diagnoses error code Service 11

  1. Read the message and confirm the oven model.
  2. Check the cabinet and the base for water, and trace any leak.
  3. Inspect the water path hoses and fittings for seepage.
  4. Test whether the water valve shuts fully when it is not called.
  5. Check the level electrode, its wiring and the CDS sensor.
  6. Replace the part that fails and run a steam cycle to confirm the pulse count is normal.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Leaks in the steam water path are next to live wiring and hot parts, so tracing them is not safe for an operator.
  • Testing the water valve and the CDS sensor takes a meter and a running oven with covers off.
  • Ignoring a small leak can let water reach electrical parts.

How error code Service 11 differs from similar codes

Service 11 means too many CDS pulses. Service 12 is the opposite, with no CDS signal at all.

Service 11Questions about Rational error code Service 11
Is Service 11 a leak?

It can be. Too many pulses point to water where it should not be, so check the floor.

Can I cook without steam?

Dry programs may still work, but steam and cleaning can be blocked.

How is it different from Service 12?

Service 11 has too many CDS pulses and Service 12 has none.
