Rational Combi Oven Error Code Service 12: CDS Sensor No Signal
Service 12 on a SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency means the CDS sensor is giving no signal. Confirm the water valve behind the oven is fully open and check whether a water filter ahead of the oven is due for a new cartridge. Let the oven cool, switch it off and on once, and call us if Service 12 stays.
Medium: steam and cleaning programs stop, though dry cooking may continue.

What does Rational error code Service 12 mean?
The CDS sensor is part of the water path to the steam generator, and it needs steady water pressure to work. It reports to the control by pulses as water moves past. When no signal arrives, the control cannot tell whether water is flowing, so it cannot trust its own steam and cleaning water. It shows Service 12 and may stop those programs. The maker's list starts with scale or debris blocking the passage to the CDS sensor, low water pressure at the oven inlet, a clogged inlet screen or sticking inlet valve, and a loose or damaged wire at the CDS sensor connector. Most of those are about whether water reaches the sensor at all. A partly closed valve or a spent filter cartridge can drop the pressure enough to starve it, and the oven then reads silence. Scale does the same over time, which is why hard water areas see this one more often. The wire at the sensor connector is the one item that is not about water, and it is the one to rule out last.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Rational SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency family, per the Original operating instructions. Other Rational generations use different service numbers.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Service 12 on the screen
- Steam programs not starting
- Cleaning stopped
- Weak flow from the water supply line
Possible causes
Listed in Rational's documentation
- Scale or debris blocking the passage to the CDS sensor
- Low water pressure at the oven inlet
- Clogged inlet screen or sticking inlet valve
- Loose or damaged wire at the CDS sensor connector
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Service 12 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Water filter cartridge past its service date and choking the flow
- Supply valve partly closed after building plumbing work
- Mineral buildup in the sensor passage in hard water
Safe checks before calling for service
- Confirm the water valve behind the oven is fully open.
- See whether a water filter ahead of the oven is due for a new cartridge.
- Let the oven cool and cycle the switch off and on once.
- If Service 12 stays, avoid steam cooking and call us, and tell us when the filter was last changed. Hot parts and live wiring sit behind the side panels.
How a technician diagnoses error code Service 12
- Read the message and confirm the oven model.
- Measure water pressure and flow at the inlet.
- Check the filter and the inlet screen.
- Test the inlet valve operation.
- Inspect the CDS sensor passage for scale and the connector for damage.
- Descale or replace the failed part and confirm a normal CDS signal on a steam fill.
- The CDS sensor and inlet valve are behind panels with live wiring.
- Descaling the passage uses chemicals that must be handled and rinsed correctly.
- Checking for a signal needs the oven running with covers off.
How error code Service 12 differs from similar codes
Service 12 means no CDS signal. Service 11 means too many CDS pulses.

Related Rational combi oven error codes
Why does low water pressure cause this?
The sensor needs steady flow to generate pulses, so weak pressure can look like a dead sensor.
Does hard water matter?
Yes. Scale can block the sensor passage over time.
Can I use the oven without steam?
Dry programs may work, but the oven can block steam and cleaning.
