Rational Combi Oven Error Code Service 14: Level Electrode No Water
Service 14 on a SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency means the level electrode does not detect water in the steam generator. If your oven is fed reverse osmosis or very soft water, the water may conduct too little for the electrode to sense. Check the water valve, restart once, and call us if it returns.
Medium: steam production stops until the electrode or water issue is fixed.

What does Rational error code Service 14 mean?
The level electrode finds water in the steam generator by passing a tiny current through it, which only works because ordinary water conducts. Very pure water, such as reverse osmosis water, conducts too little, so the electrode can read an empty generator even when it is full. The control then refuses to heat an apparently dry generator, shows Service 14, and the oven stops steam production while the message shows. The maker lists four places to look: water conductivity if the oven is fed treated or reverse osmosis water, the electrode's condition and scale on its tip, steam generator fill and the wiring to the electrode, and the water supply to the generator. The conductivity cause is easy to miss, because the water looks fine and the oven worked before a water treatment system was added. Scale on the tip does the opposite harm, insulating the electrode from water that is really there. A real shortage of water at the generator gives the same message, which is why the supply is on the list.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to the Rational SelfCookingCenter whitefficiency family, per the Original operating instructions. Other generations use different service numbers.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Service 14 on the screen
- Steam production stopped
- A generator that sounds full but reads empty
- Dry cooking still working
Possible causes
Listed in Rational's documentation
- Water conductivity too low from treated or reverse osmosis water
- Level electrode worn or scaled on its tip
- Steam generator fill or wiring to the electrode
- Water supply to the generator
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code Service 14 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Reverse osmosis system added upstream without telling the oven's installer
- Electrode tip coated after months of hard water
- Fill valve opening only partly and starving the generator
Safe checks before calling for service
- Ask whoever set up your water treatment whether the line to the oven carries reverse osmosis or very soft water.
- Check that the oven water valve is fully open.
- Let the cabinet cool and switch the oven off and on once.
- If Service 14 comes back, hold off on steam programs and phone us, leaving the panels shut because the steam generator is hot and live.
How a technician diagnoses error code Service 14
- Read the message and ask about any water treatment system.
- Measure the conductivity of the water feeding the oven.
- Inspect the level electrode for scale and test its signal.
- Check the generator fill and the wiring to the electrode.
- Confirm the water supply reaches the generator.
- Clean or replace the electrode, or advise on the water, and confirm a normal fill.
- The steam generator is hot and live, and the electrode is inside it.
- Measuring water conductivity needs a meter, and advising on treated water needs the oven's requirements.
- Wrong water can damage the generator, so the cause must be right before a part is replaced.
How error code Service 14 differs from similar codes
Service 14 is the electrode not seeing water. Service 120 also involves the electrode, but during the cleaning program.

Related Rational combi oven error codes
Why would reverse osmosis water cause an empty reading?
The electrode needs the water to conduct a small current, and very pure water barely does.
Does hard water cause it too?
Scale on the electrode tip can, which is the opposite problem.
Can I cook without steam?
Dry programs may work, but steam is stopped.
