Schaerer Coffee Machine Message: Temperature Sensor Defect
Coffee sensor defect, Hot water sensor defect or Steam sensor defect on a Schaerer Coffee Art Plus Touch means an electrical problem between the temperature sensor and the PC board, or a defective sensor. The manual's only response is to call for service.
High: a sensor on a boiler is unreadable and that boiler cannot be controlled.

What does Schaerer Coffee sensor defect mean?
Each boiler has a temperature sensor, and the PC board reads it to control heating. When the board cannot get a sensible reading, the machine shows the sensor defect message for the boiler named. The manual lists two causes: an electrical problem between the sensor and the PC board, or a temperature sensor that is itself defective. In practice those are a damaged wire or a loose plug, and a sensor that has failed. The control cannot tell them apart. The manual gives no operator step other than to call for service, which fits: this is about wiring and sensing, and nothing an operator does from the front of the machine changes it. The message names only one boiler, so the other two keep working and you can still serve those drink types while you wait. A heater that cannot be controlled is switched off by the control, which is why the named boiler stops rather than runs on.

What you may notice
- Coffee sensor defect, Hot water sensor defect or Steam sensor defect on the display
- The named boiler not heating
- Drinks of that type blocked
- Machine working on the other boilers
Possible causes
Listed in Schaerer's documentation
- Electrical problem between the sensor and the PC board
- Temperature sensor defective
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Coffee sensor defect on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Sensor wire damaged near the hot boiler
- Plug loose at the PC board
- Corrosion in the sensor connector
- Sensor failed after years of heat cycles
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the machine off and on once.
- Note which of the three boilers is named.
- Do not open the machine.
- Use the other drink types if they still work.
- Call for service and tell them which sensor was named.
How a technician diagnoses Coffee sensor defect
- Confirm which sensor is named and read the message history to see how often it appears.
- Measure the sensor resistance and compare it with the value expected at the boiler temperature.
- Check the wire and connector between the sensor and the PC board for damage, heat marks and corrosion.
- Check the board input for that sensor.
- Replace the sensor or the damaged wiring.
- Verify that the boiler heats to its set point and that the message stays away.
- Sensors sit on hot pressurized boilers, so replacing one means draining and cooling the boiler first.
- Testing the wiring and the board input is done with the machine open and powered.
- A wrong sensor reading affects boiler temperature control, so the repair has to be verified at temperature.
How Coffee sensor defect differs from similar codes
Crit. Temp. Messages list the same two causes for the same three boilers.

Can I keep using the machine?
Possibly for the drink types on the other boilers, but not for the one that is named.
Is it a wiring problem or a bad sensor?
The manual lists both causes, and a technician measures the sensor and the wiring to tell which.
Will restarting fix it?
Rarely. A momentary glitch may clear, but a damaged wire or failed sensor brings the message straight back.
