Scotsman Ice Machine Error Code 2: Auger Overload (Prodigy Plus)
A steady 2 on a Scotsman Prodigy Plus flake or nugget machine means the auger motor ran under high load and the controller shut the machine down. Heavy scale, a jam or a worn auger is the usual cause. Press Off then On to reset, make sure nothing blocks the ice chute, and call us if 2 comes back.
High: the machine has shut down to protect the auger drive and makes no ice.

What does Scotsman error code 2 mean?
In a flake or nugget machine the auger turns inside the freezing barrel, scraping ice off the wall and pushing it up and out through the chute. The controller watches how hard the auger motor works. If the load stays high, because scale has roughened the barrel, ice has jammed or frozen the auger, or the gearbox and bearings are wearing, the controller stops the machine to protect the drive and holds a steady 2 on the display. Staff find a stopped machine with a code on the display and no ice, and a reset works only until the load returns, so the machine may run a short while and stop again. The manual lists scale on the auger and barrel, an ice jam or frozen auger, gearbox and bearing condition, motor current draw, and water quality. Poor or hard water speeds up scale, which is why the same machine can run well for a year and then start to overload. Grinding sounds before the stop are worth noting for the service call.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Scotsman Prodigy Plus flake and nugget machines (FS/NH/NS series) with the controller code display. Cuber series show a different meaning for 2.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Steady 2 on the code display
- No ice being made
- Grinding or labored sounds before the stop
- Machine runs briefly after a reset, then stops
Possible causes
Listed in Scotsman's documentation
- Scale on the auger and barrel
- Ice jam or frozen auger
- Gearbox and bearings are worn
- Motor draws high current
- Water quality leaves heavy mineral deposits
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 2 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A water filter not changed in a long time, letting more minerals build up
- Ice packed solid in the chute after a bin door was left open and the ice softened and refroze
Safe checks before calling for service
- Press and release Off, then On, to reset from the code.
- Check that nothing blocks the ice chute.
- If 2 returns, leave the machine off.
- Call us and mention any grinding sounds.
- Write down any strange sounds and how long the machine ran after the reset.
How a technician diagnoses error code 2
- Read the code and history to see how often 2 has occurred.
- Check the chute and the bin area for a jam.
- With power isolated, turn the auger by hand for roughness or binding.
- Measure motor current during a short run.
- Descale the barrel, replace bearings or the gearbox as the tests show, and confirm with a full ice cycle.
- The auger drive and motor run on mains voltage behind the panels.
- Freeing a frozen auger or opening the gearbox needs the machine isolated and the right tools to avoid damage.
How error code 2 differs from similar codes
A steady 2 on Prodigy ELITE and Eclipse cubers means the maximum harvest time was exceeded. On the Prodigy Plus flake and nugget series, 2 means high auger load.

Why does it work after a reset and then stop?
The reset clears the shutdown, but if the auger load is still high the controller stops it again.
Can hard water cause this?
Yes. Scale on the auger and barrel raises the load, and water quality is one of the causes the manual lists.
Should I try to break up ice in the chute?
Only clear what you can see without tools, and leave the machine off if 2 returns.
