Traulsen Refrigerator Error Code HI CAb: High Cabinet Temperature

HI CAb means the air inside your Traulsen cabinet has climbed above the control's preset limit. Silence the alarm, keep the doors shut, check product temperatures, and clean the condenser if you can reach it safely. If the message returns with Call Service, a technician should look at the cabinet.

Medium · inspection needed

Medium: product can warm to an unsafe level if the cabinet does not recover.

What does Traulsen error code HI CAb mean?

HI CAb is the high cabinet temperature alarm on Traulsen cabinets with an Intela-Traul control, including reach-ins and undercounters such as the RHT232WUT, RLT132WUT and TS048HT. The control compares the cabinet air temperature with its preset limit and, once the limit is passed, sounds the audible alarm. If the cabinet has not recovered after five minutes, the alarm repeats and Call Service is added to the display. The same control runs Traulsen freezers as well as refrigerators, so the alarm can mean a warm freezer as much as a warm refrigerator. A short rise after a delivery or a long door opening may clear by itself. A rise that continues usually means heat is not leaving the box: doors not sealing, a dirty condenser, a defrost problem, or a fan not moving air.

Affected models and control systems

Traulsen Intela-Traul controls on R and A Series, TE, TU and TS cabinets, including G-2010 versions; refrigerators and freezers.

Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

What you may notice

  • Audible alarm and HI CAb on the display
  • Alarm repeating after five minutes with Call Service
  • Warm product or softened ice cream and frozen items
  • Ice or frost built up on the coil or vents

Possible causes

Listed in Traulsen's documentation

  • Doors left open for long periods or not sealing
  • A large amount of hot product loaded at once
  • Dirty condenser coil or restricted airflow
  • Evaporator coil iced up from a defrost problem
  • Fan not moving air through the cabinet

Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code HI CAb on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.

  • A condenser coil packed with grease and lint in a busy line
  • An evaporator fan that has stopped, leaving the coil cold but the box warm
  • A defrost heater or termination part that no longer clears frost

Safe checks before calling for service

✓ What an operator can do
  1. Press the alarm cancel button to silence the sound.
  2. Close all doors and keep them shut while the cabinet recovers.
  3. Check product with a thermometer and move anything that is warm.
  4. Clean the condenser coil or filter if you can reach it safely.
  5. If the message returns with Call Service, tell us the cabinet temperature and whether the evaporator fan is audible.

How a technician diagnoses error code HI CAb

  1. Read the cabinet temperature on a calibrated thermometer and compare it with the display.
  2. Check door gaskets and closure for air leaks.
  3. Inspect the condenser coil and fan for blockage and operation.
  4. Check the evaporator coil for ice and test the defrost heater and its termination device.
  5. Verify the evaporator fan motor runs and the sensor reads true.
  6. Check refrigerant system operation only after airflow and defrost are cleared.
! Leave this to a technician
  • Condenser and evaporator fan work happens behind panels near live line-voltage wiring.
  • A refrigerant circuit problem needs gauges, a leak search and EPA-certified handling.
  • Defrost heaters and their controls carry full line voltage and must be tested with a meter.
