Wilbur Curtis G4 Brewer Message: Internal Error 1
Internal Error 1, shown as UPM/UCM Communication, means there is a break in the communication circuit between the universal power module (UPM) and the universal control module (UCM). Brewing stops. A technician checks the wiring harness between the two modules.
High: brewing stops because the two modules cannot communicate.

What does Wilbur Curtis Internal Error 1 mean?
The G4 brewer is run by two modules. The UCM is the control and display side, and the UPM is the power side that switches the heater and valves. They talk through a wiring harness. If that communication circuit is broken, the UCM and UPM cannot exchange commands, and the display shows Internal Error 1 (UPM/UCM Communication). The manual calls it an error, and brewing stops. Its action is to check the wiring harness from pins 4, 9 and 11 of the 14-pin connector on the UPM to pins 2, 3 and 6 of the 8-pin connector on the UCM. A connector that is not fully seated, a pin that has backed out, or a cut wire in that harness will produce the message. The brewer is not telling you anything about water or temperature. It has lost the link between its own parts, and nothing can run until the link is back.
Affected models and control systems
Wilbur Curtis G4 ThermoPro 1.5 gallon brewers, models G4TP2T (twin) and G4TP2S (single). The error refers to the harness between the 14-pin UPM connector and the 8-pin UCM connector.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Internal Error 1 (UPM/UCM Communication) on the display
- Brewing stops
- Display may freeze or respond slowly
- No heating or filling
Possible causes
Listed in Wilbur Curtis's documentation
- Break in the UPM-UCM communication circuit
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind Internal Error 1 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Connector not fully seated after cleaning or service
- Pin backed out of the connector housing
- Harness wire cut or pinched where it passes a bracket
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the rear toggle off briefly and then on.
- Do not open the brewer to touch the connectors.
- Try one brew.
- If the message returns, note it and call us.
How a technician diagnoses Internal Error 1
- Read the display and confirm Internal Error 1.
- Check the harness from pins 4, 9 and 11 of the 14-pin UPM connector.
- Check pins 2, 3 and 6 of the 8-pin UCM connector.
- Test continuity of each wire.
- Repair the harness or replace the module.
- The connectors are behind covers with line voltage nearby.
- Pin-by-pin continuity tests need a meter and the pin map.
- Replacing a module without proving the harness wastes money.
How Internal Error 1 differs from similar codes
Internal Error 1 is a lost link between modules; Internal Error 2 is a settings mismatch between them.
