Dexter Washer Error Code F16: Drive Overheat
F16 means the temperature sensor inside the drive reads too high. Clean the drive heatsink fins and the fan cover louvers, then start a cycle and confirm the cooling fan runs once the cylinder turns.
High: the drive stops itself when hot, so the washer is down until it is cooled and cleaned.
What does Dexter error code F16 mean?
The drive has a temperature sensor, and if it reads too high the drive stops and the control shows F16, which the Common Washer guide labels DRIVE OH. The heat comes from the power electronics, and it must be carried off by a heatsink and a cooling fan. The manual's actions are about airflow: clean the heatsink fins and the louvers of the fan cover, then start a cycle and check that the VFD cooling fan runs when the cylinder turns. The causes it lists are a dirty heatsink and a failed VFD cooling fan. Lint is the common source in a laundry, since it travels in the air and settles on fins. Unlike F14, which comes from load, F16 comes from cooling. The drive may recover after it cools, but if the airflow is not restored, the alarm returns.
Affected models and control systems
Dexter T-450 SWD Express stack washer-dryers, serial 481983 and up. The same F10 to F21 table appears in the WCAD-Series vended washers manual (8533-073-001, 11/11). Older Dexter washers number their drive codes differently.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.

- Clear lint from the area around the washer without opening the electrical panel.
- Restart and note whether F16 appears after a long run.
How a technician diagnoses error code F16
- Read the code and note the VFD light code.
- Clean the heatsink fins and fan cover louvers.
- Start a cycle and confirm the cooling fan runs when the cylinder turns.
- Measure the fan supply.
- Replace the fan if it does not run.
- The drive and its fan are inside the live electrical enclosure.
- Cleaning fins incorrectly can damage them.
- Overheating shortens the life of the drive.
How error code F16 differs from similar codes
