Dexter Commercial Washer Error Code F4: Comm Error 1 (I2C)
F4 (COMM ERROR 1) means the controller's internal I2C bus has gone quiet, so parts of the controller are not talking to each other. Power the washer off for a minute and on again, and note whether the drive shows a light. If F4 returns, call us.
High: the washer stops and will not run until the controller's internal communication is restored.
What does Dexter error code F4 mean?
Inside a Dexter VFD washer controller, several circuits share a short internal data bus called I2C. One side acts as master and the other as slave, and each expects regular valid traffic. If the slave side hears nothing valid for six seconds, or the master side for eight seconds, the controller calls the bus dead, stops the washer and shows F4 (COMM ERROR 1). This is a different conversation from the one behind F13 and COMM ERROR 5, which concern the cable to the drive. Here the parts of the controller itself are not talking, although the maker still points to a loose or damaged data cable between the controller connectors, a connector that is not fully seated, and a drive that is not indicating normal status. The last item is why the document asks about the drive light: a drive that has not started up properly can leave the bus idle. If reseating the data cable does not bring the washer back, the maker says to replace the PCB, because a failed bus on the board cannot be repaired in the field.
Affected models and control systems
Dexter C-Series and T-series coin washers with a VFD, T-300 to T-1450, such as the T-350 Express.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- F4 (COMM ERROR 1) appears and the drum stops
- The washer will not take a start
- The drive light is dark or not behaving as usual
- The message follows a service where connectors were handled
Possible causes
Listed in Dexter's documentation
- Loose or damaged data cable between controller connectors
- Connector not fully seated on the controller
- Drive not indicating normal status
- PCB controller with a failed I2C bus
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code F4 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A connector pushed in at an angle during a past board change, making contact on only some pins
- Vibration over years that has gradually walked a plug out of its socket
Safe checks before calling for service
- Switch the washer off at the disconnect for a minute and on again.
- Do not open the controller or pull on any cable.
- Note whether the drive shows a light and tell us.
- If F4 returns, call us; the maker says to reseat the data cable and replace the PCB if it comes back.
- Tell us whether the washer was recently serviced or moved.
How a technician diagnoses error code F4
- Confirm F4 and whether it appears at power-up or mid-cycle.
- Check the drive status light and any drive code.
- Inspect the data cable and both controller connectors, then reseat them.
- Check supply and ground to the controller and drive.
- If the bus still stalls with a known-good cable, replace the PCB controller.
- Run a full cycle and confirm the error stays clear.
- The I2C bus runs between circuits inside the controller, so any fix is made at the board.
- Reseating a data cable with the controller powered can damage its connectors.
- Deciding between a cable, a connector and a failed board takes a meter and a swap test.
How error code F4 differs from similar codes
F13 (COMM ERROR 4) and COMM ERROR 5 concern the cable to the drive; F4 concerns the internal bus of the controller.

Related Dexter washer error codes
Is F4 the same as F13?
No. F13 is the controller losing the drive, while F4 is the controller's internal bus going silent.
Why does the maker ask about the drive light?
A drive that does not indicate normal status can leave the bus idle, which helps point to the cause.
Can I reseat the cable myself?
We advise against it. The controller is live, and reseating is a first technician step.
