Repairs this series usually needs

  1. Pilot out on the oven or griddle
  2. Burners will not light or burner assembly not seated
  3. Uneven baking from the range not level, flue or regulator
  4. Oven too hot or cold from thermostat calibration
  5. Top burner valves hot or sticking

Challenger XL is Wolf’s gas restaurant range. The model number reads like a recipe: C or S for a convection or standard oven, the width in inches, then the top, with B for burners, G for a thermostatic griddle, GB for a raised griddle and CB for a charbroiler. A C36C-2B24G is a 36 in. Range with a convection oven, two burners and a 24 in. Griddle. The data plate is at the rear of the unit.

Controls are manual valves and standing pilots, so the pilot and the thermocouple are where most service starts. The maker’s relight steps say to wait 5 minutes and hold the red safety button for at least 30 seconds. A gas smell means you leave first and phone the gas utility from outside.

We check pilots, burners, the thermostat and the gas pressure. Older ranges often have plenty of life left, and when one does not, we tell you.

FAQWolf Challenger XL Gas Restaurant Ranges questions
How do I read a Challenger XL model number?

C or S shows a convection or standard oven, the number is the width in inches, and the letters after it show the top, such as B for burners and G for a griddle.

My pilot keeps going out. What do you check?

The thermocouple, the pilot safety valve, the pilot orifice and the ventilation around the range. Strong drafts or grease buildup can put a pilot out.

Do you repair older Challenger XL ranges?

Yes. Older Wolf ranges are on our list. The price is written first, and if a repair would cost more than it returns, you hear that from us.
