Kold-Draft Ice Machine Error Code 40: Freeze Cycle Too Short
Code 40 means the freeze cycle lasted under 5 minutes three times in a row before an automatic harvest. A technician should check the expansion valve, the probes and the plumbing for leaks.
High: the machine ends up shutting down if short cycles repeat.

What does Kold-Draft error code 40 mean?
A normal freeze cycle takes far longer than five minutes. When the K4B controller sees three cycles in a row end in under 5 minutes, it assumes something is telling it to harvest early, and it posts Code 40: 40 (freeze cycle too short, LED 40). On Rev 1.6 and higher, the machine first defrosts for 5 minutes and cycles water for 10 minutes, with LED 40 flashing, and it only goes solid and shuts down after three more short cycles. The manual lists five causes. Slush in the pump, lines or tank, from an expansion valve that is out of adjustment or missing insulation. A low-level probe circuit that is open, or a bad probe assembly. A water leak that causes an early harvest. An evaporator probe adjusted too warm. Or a high-level probe that shorts out during fill. The pattern in these causes is that the control is told the ice is ready when it is not.
Affected models and control systems
The GT36x, GT56x, GB56x and GB106x with K4B boards Rev 1.1 to 1.80. Rev 1.6 and later add a 5-minute defrost and 10-minute water cycle before a shutdown.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- LED 40 lit or flashing
- Thin or slushy ice
- Machine cycling quickly without making a full batch
Possible causes
Listed in Kold-Draft's documentation
- Slushing in the pump, lines or tank from expansion valve misadjustment or missing insulation
- Low-level probe circuit open or bad probe assembly
- Water leak causing early harvest
- Evaporator probe out of adjustment (too warm)
- High-level probe short circuiting during fill
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 40 on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Mineral crust on the probe tips that makes the control read the wrong level
- Insulation sleeve fallen off the expansion valve bulb after cleaning
Safe checks before calling for service
- Look for water on the floor or on the machine that would point to a leak.
- Check whether the ice that was made is slushy or thin.
- Reset the controller and run a cycle.
- If Code 40 returns, tell the technician whether the LED flashes or is solid and what the ice looks like.
How a technician diagnoses error code 40
- Read the code and note LED state and board revision.
- Check the expansion valve insulation and adjustment.
- Check the low-level probe circuit and the high-level probe for shorts during fill.
- Inspect the plumbing for leaks and adjust the evaporator probe.
- Reset and observe a full cycle.
- Expansion valve adjustment is part of the refrigeration circuit.
- Probe circuits are tested with a meter while water is present.
- Slush indicates a refrigeration balance that cannot be judged by eye.
How error code 40 differs from similar codes
Code 30 is a freeze cycle that runs too long; Code 40 is one that ends too soon.

Does Code 40 mean my machine is not freezing?
The freeze may be short because the control was told to harvest early.
Can a leak do this?
Yes, a water leak causing early harvest is listed.
What does a flashing LED mean?
On Rev 1.6 and higher the machine is still running its recovery steps.
