Scotsman Ice Machine Error: 1 Flash, No Ice Sensed (Prodigy Plus)
One flash on a Scotsman Prodigy Plus flake or nugget machine means the controller did not sense ice being made and is retrying. The machine is still operating. Check that the water supply valve is open and the filter is not blocked, and call us if the flashing continues.
Medium: the machine is still making some ice, but the controller is already struggling.

What does Scotsman error code 1 flashes mean?
On a Prodigy Plus flake or nugget machine the controller looks for the ice it should be producing. If it senses none, it does not shut down immediately. It retries, and while it retries the display flashes a single time. Nothing has stopped yet, so staff may see only slow production, small amounts of ice in the bin or a code flashing while the machine keeps working. The flash tells us the controller has already had trouble at least once. The manual lists a low water supply or reservoir level, an ice sensor that is dirty or damaged, a worn auger or scaled evaporator that stops ice moving out, and a low refrigerant charge. Because the machine is still running, this is the easiest time to check the simple items, the water valve and filter, and to note the amount of ice in the bin. The cabinet stays closed, since the auger and refrigerant parts are service items and a flashing code often leads to a steady shutdown if ignored.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Scotsman Prodigy Plus flake and nugget machines (FS/NH/NS series) with the controller code display, per the Prodigy Plus A Series service manual of July 2020.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Code flashing once on the display
- Less ice in the bin than usual
- Slow flake or nugget production
- Machine still running
Possible causes
Listed in Scotsman's documentation
- Water supply or reservoir level is low
- Ice sensor is dirty or damaged
- Auger is worn or the evaporator is scaled
- Refrigerant charge is low
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 1 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A clogged inlet filter on a line that feeds several machines
- Mineral buildup on the evaporator that is slowing flake formation
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check that the water supply valve is open and the filter is not blocked.
- Look at the bin and note how much ice is there.
- Do not open the cabinet.
- If the flashing continues, call us.
How a technician diagnoses error code 1 flashes
- Read the code history and confirm how often the retry occurred.
- Verify water supply, filter and reservoir fill.
- Check and clean the ice sensor, and test its wiring.
- Inspect the auger and evaporator for wear and scale.
- Check refrigerant pressures and replace parts only after testing.
- The auger drive and compressor run on mains voltage behind the panels.
- Refrigerant pressure checks need licensed gauges and recovery equipment.
How error code 1 flashes differs from similar codes
On Prodigy ELITE and Eclipse cubers, one flash means a freeze time retry. On the Prodigy Plus flake and nugget series, one flash means no ice was sensed.

Is the machine broken if it flashes?
Not yet. It is retrying while still operating, but it is a sign that ice production is below what the controller expects.
Can a dirty filter cause this?
Yes. A blocked filter lowers the water supply, which is one of the listed causes.
Will it become a steady 1?
It can, if the retries do not succeed.
