Scotsman Ice Machine Error: 2 Flashes, Auger Load (Prodigy Plus)
Two flashes on a Scotsman Prodigy Plus flake or nugget machine mean the auger motor is working under a high load and the controller is retrying. The machine may slow, grind or make odd noise. Listen for grinding, check that the ice chute is clear and call us if the flashing returns.
Medium: the machine is still making ice, but the auger is working harder than it should.

What does Scotsman error code 2 flashes mean?
The auger in a flake or nugget machine pushes and compresses ice up the barrel, so the motor load rises whenever something resists it. When the load goes above what the controller allows, it does not shut down on the first event. It backs off, tries again and flashes two times on the display. Nothing has stopped yet, but ice output drops, and staff may hear the machine slow, grind or make an odd noise. The manual lists scale on the auger and evaporator, an ice jam in the chute or bin area, auger bearings and gear condition, the auger motor and drive, and water temperature and quality. A heavy load usually grows slowly: scale thickens, bearings wear, and the retries come closer together. If they keep coming, the controller will stop the machine and hold a steady 2. That makes a flashing display a good moment to check the cleaning schedule and to write down what the machine sounds like, which helps us a great deal.
Affected models and control systems
This applies to Scotsman Prodigy Plus flake and nugget machines (FS/NH/NS series) with the controller code display. On ELITE and Eclipse cubers, two flashes refer to harvest time.
Code numbers and their meaning can change between control generations. We match the full model and control before acting on a code.
What you may notice
- Code flashing twice on the display
- Grinding or labored sounds
- Reduced ice output
- Machine still running
Possible causes
Listed in Scotsman's documentation
- Scale on the auger and evaporator
- Ice jam in the chute or bin area
- Auger bearings and gears are worn
- Auger motor or drive is under strain
- Water temperature and quality
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code 2 flashes on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- A water supply that has become much warmer in summer, softening ice into a dense plug
- Descaling put off for a season, so mineral buildup now drags on the auger
Safe checks before calling for service
- Listen for grinding or labored sounds from the machine.
- Check that the ice chute is not blocked.
- Follow the cleaning and descaling schedule in your owner's manual.
- Call us if the flashing returns, and write down any strange sounds.
How a technician diagnoses error code 2 flashes
- Read the code history and see how often the retry has occurred.
- Inspect the chute and bin area for packed ice.
- Check auger rotation by hand for roughness, with power isolated.
- Measure motor current during a run and compare it with the rating.
- Descale and replace bearings or drive parts only as the tests show.
- The auger drive is powered by mains voltage and sits behind panels.
- Bearing and gear inspection needs the barrel opened, which risks damage without the right procedure.
How error code 2 flashes differs from similar codes
Two flashes mean the retry stage, while a steady 2 means the machine has shut down. On Prodigy ELITE and Eclipse cubers two flashes refer to a long harvest instead.

Related Scotsman ice machine error codes
Why does the machine sound different?
A heavy load makes the auger and motor labor, which can cause grinding or odd noises.
Is it urgent?
It is a warning. The machine still runs, but continued retries can end in a shutdown.
Does water quality matter?
Yes. It is one of the listed causes because minerals build scale on the auger and evaporator.
