Bally Walk-In Cooler Error Code ASA: Air Sensor Alarm
ASA, Air Sensor Alarm, on a Bally walk-in evaporator with the SmartVap+ controller means the return air temperature sensor is shorted or open. The manual gives the trigger and no repair steps. Check how warm the walk-in is and call a technician.
Medium: the controller has lost its room temperature reading, so the walk-in should be watched with a separate thermometer.

What does Bally error code ASA mean?
The return air sensor tells the SmartVap+ controller how warm the air coming back to the evaporator is, which is its picture of the room temperature. Cooling cycles, the high and low temperature alarms and the door alarm all depend on that number. The controller watches the sensor's signal, and when it reads as a short or an open circuit it raises the Air Sensor Alarm and shows ASA. The manual's Alarm Status Menu lists this alarm and its trigger only. It does not say what the controller does with its cooling control while ASA is active. Active alarms can be scrolled on the on-board display with the arrow keys, and the red or yellow light tells you whether the system is not running or running. Because the room reading is affected, check the walk-in's real temperature with a separate thermometer.
Affected models and control systems
The SmartVap+ evaporator controller, with its on-board display or dashboard display, used with Bally walk-in evaporators. The manual is Bulletin B30-SVP-OM-2.05, for firmware 2.05 and later.

What you may notice
- ASA appears in the active alarm list
- The room temperature shown on the controller is missing or looks wrong
- The walk-in runs warmer or colder than the setpoint
Possible causes
Listed in Bally's documentation
- Return air temperature sensor shorted or open
Other likely causes — what usually sits behind error code ASA on this control. A technician confirms which one it is before any part is replaced.
- Sensor in the return air stream was knocked loose or disconnected during stocking
- Condensation or ice in the sensor connector
- Sensor lead damaged where it passes through the evaporator housing
Safe checks before calling for service
- Check the real room temperature with a separate thermometer and protect product if it is rising.
- Scroll the active alarms and note whether the light is red or yellow.
- Look near the evaporator, without opening panels, for a sensor lead hanging loose or iced over.
- Try Clear Alarms (CLA, press and hold) once and note if ASA returns, then tell the technician.
How a technician diagnoses error code ASA
- Read active alarms and compare the controller's room temperature with a reference thermometer.
- Inspect the return air sensor, its lead and connector for damage, ice or corrosion.
- Measure the sensor's resistance at the controller against its curve at the actual air temperature.
- Check the cable run for a pinch or an open conductor.
- Replace the sensor only if the test fails, then clear alarms and confirm the room reading tracks the thermometer.
- The sensor connects to energized controller wiring inside the evaporator housing, which should not be opened by an operator.
- Deciding whether the room reading or the cooling itself is wrong needs a reference thermometer and refrigeration-side measurements.
How error code ASA differs from similar codes
ASA is the return air sensor alarm. The high and low temperature alarms HtA and LtA depend on this same room reading.

Will product be safe while ASA shows?
Check the walk-in with a separate thermometer. The controller may not be reading the room correctly while this alarm is active.
Does ASA mean the cooler is not cooling?
Not necessarily. It means the return air sensor is shorted or open. The cooling may be fine, but the controller cannot confirm it.
Why are other alarms appearing with it?
The room reading feeds several alarms, so a bad air sensor can show with HtA, LtA or the door alarm.
